When you consider the culture clash at Arsenal when Arsene Wenger arrived, with how well established they were as a football club, you would imagine that the appointment was ahead of it's time. A few years too many unfortunately.

RIP Dr Jo. Will always remember those European nights, home and away, very fondly.

They were good days.

It probably didn’t help that to be honest we had overachieved in the final season of Graham Taylor’s first stint.

Seemed a decent man. One of Ellis’s more daring experiments which sadly didn’t come off.
I thought he was at least in his 70’s when he became our manager. He looked really old, maybe it was just an Eastern bloc look after years of communism.

Doug ahead of his time or realising that in the aftermath of the fall of the Iron Curtain, there were Eastern Europeans who could be hired on the cheap? I know where my money would be.

Dr Jo is one of the great Villa what might of beens.  I was sad when it didn't work out, but, then again, the fact that it didn't ushered in three and half years of BFR, much of which I wouldn't have missed for the world.

RIP

I remember when he was appointed and everyone said who? A decent man who had a good career as a coach.

RIP Dr Jo.You left us with some great memories. It seemed at the time to be a really exciting direction that the club were going in and we were going to mop up all the young talent from around Europe.

The first Villa manager I remember as a kid. Vague memories of him being ridiculed at the time but as has been said, Villa were a first-mover when it came to adopting a broader horizon with regards to modern coaching. I wonder did Wenger ever lean on him for advice. Would also be interested if Jo had given any interviews in recent times about his spell at Villa.

I remember Doug introducing him at the press conference and asking the reporters if anyone knew who he was.
I remember going to the Makita pre season tournament at Wembley, hoping for a new dawn with a foreign manager.

He was a forward thinking appointment by Doug that blazed a trail but didn’t work out for us.
Jo seemed a very decent and honourable man.

Another Holte Ender in the Sky.

That Inter Milan game is one of my favourite games I’ve ever attended, great memories.

Speaking when he was 80.

"I learned a lot," said Venglos, who still follows the results of the team. "I watch Aston Villa. I feel joy when things go well for the club."
