One of the first foreign managers in the top flight, ahead of his time. I recall people being bemused by post match warm downs, now fairly common practice. Right man, wrong time.

Villa’s visionary: The manager with the short spell and long legacy

Dr Josef Vengloš' brief stint in charge of Aston Villa is remembered, if at all, as a failure. But 30 years on, it can be seen also as a crucial moment in the transformation of English football, says Roger Domeneghetti.

On an unseasonably warm night in October 1990, Elton Welsby welcomed the viewers of ITV's The Match to Villa Park for a UEFA Cup tie between Aston Villa and Internazionale.

The match generated huge interest both in England and abroad. It was the biggest game played by an English team in European competition since the ban imposed after Heysel was lifted. It also pitted English and Italian teams against each other for the first time since the tragedy five years earlier.

The match was notable for another reason. In the Villa dugout was Dr Josef Vengloš, the club's new manager and the first man not born in the British Isles to take charge of a top-flight English team.

RIP. Always seemed a good man, didn't work out at Villa for one reason or another and had an excellent career elsewhere. Always wondered whether he might have made a success of it at Villa if not for blatantly crooked officiating in the second leg against Inter.

When you consider the culture clash at Arsenal when Arsene Wenger arrived, with how well established they were as a football club, you would imagine that the appointment was ahead of it's time. A few years too many unfortunately.

Seemed a decent man. One of Ellis’s more daring experiments which sadly didn’t come off.
I thought he was at least in his 70’s when he became our manager. He looked really old, maybe it was just an Eastern bloc look after years of communism.

Doug ahead of his time or realising that in the aftermath of the fall of the Iron Curtain, there were Eastern Europeans who could be hired on the cheap? I know where my money would be.

Dr Jo is one of the great Villa what might of beens.  I was sad when it didn't work out, but, then again, the fact that it didn't ushered in three and half years of BFR, much of which I wouldn't have missed for the world.

RIP

The first Villa manager I remember as a kid. Vague memories of him being ridiculed at the time but as has been said, Villa were a first-mover when it came to adopting a broader horizon with regards to modern coaching. I wonder did Wenger ever lean on him for advice. Would also be interested if Jo had given any interviews in recent times about his spell at Villa.

I remember Doug introducing him at the press conference and asking the reporters if anyone knew who he was.
I remember going to the Makita pre season tournament at Wembley, hoping for a new dawn with a foreign manager.

He was a forward thinking appointment by Doug that blazed a trail but didn’t work out for us.
Jo seemed a very decent and honourable man.

I always felt in results in the first three games had have gone better things may have been different. Draw at home to Southampton, losing somehow at Maine Rd when battered them, and losing at Anfield to a last minute wondergoal from John Barnes.
We were clearly trying to adapt to a more pass and move style, and it seemed the belief went from the players when the results didn't come.

RIP, a great choice of manager if only because he scanned beautifully into "Claret and blue army"

That's bought back some memories as I went to virtually every game home and away that season and you're right. That Man Citeh game particularly was as a travesty - Andy Dibble rugby tackled David Platt (or was it handball) for a free kick outside the area. We looked a good side but fell away badly post Christmas, Man City at home was not fun.

Indeed. Even on the Rangers forum there's no negative comments despite him managing Celtic it's "RIP, sad news", "hard man to dislike", 'decent football man" etc. which isn't always the case up there. They also mention him being the first foreign manager with us and ahead of his time.

I remember thinking it was a strange appointment at the time. Think I would’ve been 16/17 back then, but it did pave the way for more progressive foreign coaches to come in and tighten things up at top flight clubs. Ultimately didn’t work out for either party, but maybe if he’d had another season, who knows? Didn’t know he started out in Aus managing. Decent fella.

I was at Selhurst Park April 91 with Marc Goldberg, by this time the Vultures were hovering. In the Executive Lounge there were lots of press and Football dignitaries, Malcolm Alison  breezed past sporting a very long trench coat topped with a Stetson as if to say look at me I am out of work. Doctor Jo walked by and lots of people nodded and muttered knowingly.

Dr Jo was a European style coach. SGT was a prime example of the seventies and eighties British football manager as was Ron Saunders. They ran the place from top to bottom and could probably tell you how much the weekly milk bill was. It was too much of a culture shock when the players lost SGT and had to adapt to Dr Jo. To the point where they just didn't adapt. But at least we have the first leg with Inter to remember him by.
We were basically playing an Italian and German 1990 combined World Cup eleven.

We went to that too. There were four of us on the tube with a carriage full of Arsenal. They started getting really chopsy, and somehow got on to the subject of our manager.

“You haven’t even got an English manager you wankers”.

Their manager was George Graham. That well known English manager.
