It’s interesting but if you look at their player ratings in the mails Manchester sister paper, they mostly all scores really highly and the general jist was one of their best performances of the season.
If that’s the case, we firstly outplayed them for large parts of one of their better peformances and secondly there really not all that.
Both our fullbacks look really good players.

I thought he was excellent, along with McGinn.

Agreed. Important to note that he was up against Paul Pogba, who when he can be arsed like he showed glimpses of yesterday, is really quite excellent. And McTominay is developing into a very good player. We you put them along with Bruno Fernandes we did really well against what is a very strong midfield.

McTominay, as demonstrated again last night, is a very average player. A poor man's Darren Fletcher without an ounce of technical ability. No surprise that he was hooked very early. Pogba did well last night but is having another very poor season for them and their support want him out asap. Any midfield that has the likes of McTominay, Fred or Matic starting in it isnt that great. Even in the first half last night, Neville was saying the Villa trio were dominating them. Second half midfield battle was a lot more even, McGinn went out of the game completely and I thought Luiz left his centre backs isolated too often.

The worrying thing for me from last night is that pretty much all our good attacking play came from or through Jack. Goal aside, I cant recall a single positive contribution from Traore. AEG tried hard and had a few decent runs but little threat. Watkins, cows arses and banjos come to mind. Ramsey didnt make any impact upon his introduction. Barkley certainly a loss but we need more options on the bench.

That midfield has got them to 26 of the last 30 points. You can call them average all you want but they have played a major role in their recent excellent run. Is it the best ever? Of course not. Not even close. But they are better than average.

We're not Shrewsbury. We lost, we ought to have got something. We didn't. We were fucked by the officials but that's what happens there. There's no shame in losing but there's nothing to be proud of.
agree with most of your post, but not the bit where you say there’s nothing to be proud of. Disagree with that, Villa more than matched them. Their celebrations at the end told its own story. Seems like every time we get fkd over against them by the officials. Absolute ****** they are.

22 fouls. McTominay, Fred and Matic kicked the fuck out of us. And he called us physical.

I cannot abide that club.
completely agree Ads.

Ramsey was within millimetres of a goal moments after coming on and I thought he did quite well overall. And I think you're underestimating their midfield they've been on an outstanding run and the midfield has been a big part of that. As for the game itself we went toe to toe with them and we definitely had them rattled. Two major decisions went their way as it always does there. A point would not have flattered us.

Well said SE. Losing a game to any other club in the League is not acceptable. Yes it happens but we must never be proud of performance where that game has been lost.

You can always take something out of the performance though. For example we didn't lose heart from the robbery at West Ham and took that performance into December and had a fantastic run.

I took more out of last night than the endless 1-0 or 2-0 wins we had in the championship v likes of Rotherham and Bolton under Bruce when there was no plan at all and we were just plodding through.

If you look at every single league game we've played this season we've been incredibly consistant. Just second half v Leeds and first half v Southampton where we're fallen well below standards and that is nigh on a miracle after last season.

So MOTD through Ian Wright reckons that's a penalty because Luiz "clips" him.  HTF do you kick somebody with the back of your calf.  Unbelieveable bollocks !  Was Douglas at fault for getting the wrong side - yes but there is no reason why the blame for that contact is his especially when he has a hand on his throat.  Had enough of this and we have to move on but but the attitude of football pros is disgusting

Just watching motd and I can't believe Ian Wright's take on the penalty. They showed a still of Pogba's foot clearly wrapped around Doug's leg. The image proves without doubt that it was Pogba who made contact with Luiz. Wright's take? "well you can clearly see that Douglas Luiz fouls him" Whaaat? The image proves the exact opposite you fucking plum.

I still think it was a penalty, and one that didn't need to happen. Luiz is behind him and with arms on him before the clip.

The difference is we wouldn't have been given it against them.

Don't agree in the slightest regarding their midfield. Moutinho was the best midfielder by a distance in the Wolves game earlier in the week. They have to play two stoppers to cover Maguire but out of the three they rotate none of them are much good. None of them could get close to Grealish in the second half until Matic decided with Oliver's blessing to foul him at will.

Take the last 15 mins even yesterday, they don't have a single midfielder capable of setting a tempo or controlling a game, even to Michael Carricks level. Just handed us back possession time after time. They are very good on the counter attack and will always carry a goal threat with the players they have. But a decent midfield or defence they do not have. I'd expect, particularly if Thiago is playing next week, that Liverpool will destroy them. That's the killer really from yesterday, we really should have got a point at a minimum on chances created alone, peno or not.

Watching it live I thought it was a nailed on pen. But having seen replays from various angles I now think it's obvious that Pogba makes contact with the back of Luiz's leg then trips himself up. The referee himself could of come to the same conclusion if he had used the available tech and gone over to the monitor. Piss poor from the ref and he's supposed to be our best one. God help us.
