On reflection, it was not the on did decision that bothers me, it was the way it was so quickly dismissed by the VAR official when we have seen decisions continually pored over.

It would help if we could hear what the VAR official.is saying to the referee like they do in rugby, so we know exactly what the thought process is behind decisions.

Right before Bailly blocks that Davis shot, doesn't Maguire handle the ball?

...and that is exactly what I thought var was for. To overturn incorrect 1st viewings of referees, but it's failing badly.

No, in theory it’s to overturn obvious and clear mistakes. Which would be fair enough if it was consistent. But was our penalty award against Brighton clear and obvious?

Yes. It is failing badly!
Last night's penalty was an incorrect 1st viewing by the referee that should have been overturned by a "fair" var. It was clear and obvious to me in real time and I was viewing the game on a phone.
The penalty vs Brighton was a correct 1st viewing by the referee but was overturned incorrectly by var
It's clear and obvious to me that var is a f-ck up.

Yes he does.

I've not seen any mention of it. We could have done with the players making a big deal of it.

Clear pen for me. Luiz knocks his leg which causes him to trips. Certainly not a clear and obvious error, again, for me. I respect that we all see it differently.

Yeah but you always like the attention.

What are you on about? If, by “attention” you mean I like to participate and talk about my favorite football team, Aston Villa, and discuss it with others like everybody else on this forum, then I guess I like the “attention.” 🙄

If the majority had said it was a clear penalty, you would have said the opposite.

No need for that is there? Even Dean Smith said he thought it was a penalty on first viewing.

Yeah, I’m being fractious for the point of being fractious.

Apologies pelty, I’m just being a knobhead!

For what it’s worth, if there was no VAR, the referee has given a penalty and that is it. Apart from its often discussed problems when used, VAR when not used adds another layer of crap.

Didn't think it was penalty, but Doug didn't need to make the challenge, there were already 2 Villa players covering Pogba's run.

Bigger picture, last night's game showed why we now have a quality team, went toe to toe with an United team, who are now joint top, and deserved a point. The reaction of the United players at the end, showed they knew they've been in a tough game. Would go for Matty Cash as MOM, thought he was superb, and of course Jack as well.

What challenge? Doug was running alongside him and the penalty was given because pgoba tripped himself up after catching his foot on Doug's calf. It's never a foul.

One thing I will say is that as much as the fouling and officiating annoyed me, how good is it to go to Old Trafford and have them needing to consistently foul us in order to cling on to the game? We have massively moved forward and I’m pretty sure all teams fear us now.

Agree with that, Paul. Even at my most optimistic I wasn’t expecting us to be in a position this season to be top 6 contenders.

No problem. Fwiw, I was pretty vociferous here (along with the majority) on the Brighton non-pen decision against Trez. I remain angry about that one to this minute. As I think I have said, I am just not certain yesterday’s was a clear an obvious error and I am more annoyed that Luiz put the ref in a position where he could make the call. As others have said, there were defenders in the area who could help and fighting/pulling like that in the box is a dangerous game, especially against that lot.

Someone here also said that he is upset by the lack of cards shown. I felt similarly; Matic was simply thuggish and should have had a red 15 minutes after being introduced. I struggle to think of one competent ref in the PL; it really is a problem.

We really need to do them at VP. If we have our first 11 out we've got a good chance. Ended home droughts v Liverpool and Arsenal in recent months so it's time.
