Clear pen for me. Luiz knocks his leg which causes him to trips. Certainly not a clear and obvious error, again, for me. I respect that we all see it differently.

What about Pogba with his out stretched arm and hand in Luiz's face. isn't that a foul?

Fair point. I was referring mostly to the leg action. That said, I thought the hand checking was something both players were doing and I have seen similar all over the field. Again, the debate suggest (to me) that this is not clear and obvious just as I argued that the Brighton pen reversal was ridiculous on the same grounds.

Pogba catches his foot on Luiz's calf which then knocks his foot sideways a bit and it catches on his other leg, thereby tripping himself up.  It's the initial touch on Luiz which is deemed the foul I think.

But it's Pogba who initiates the contact with Luiz's leg.  That could, and in my view should,  be interpreted as Pogba kicking, and thereby fouling, Luiz.

Unfortunately the powers that be these days seem to have decided that that kind of thing is a foul the other way.  I've no idea why,  I find it difficult to fathom how it can be a foul against a player who has done absolutely nothing to initiate contact, and in favour of a player who has.  It's just another example of how shit football has become.

We're not Shrewsbury. We lost, we ought to have got something. We didn't. We were fucked by the officials but that's what happens there. There's no shame in losing but there's nothing to be proud of.

You would have thought they had just won the league by how they reacted at the finish.
It just goes to show how they knew they had got away with one.
The penalty was iffy at best and would never have been given at the other end.
As Deano said in the post match interview, why doesn't the ref go and look at the VAR monitor.
It was the key moment in the game and surely worth another look by the ref.
The penalty decision in the Brighton game must have taken at least 5 minutes before being overturned.
You can't help feeling there is some kind of conspiracy going on when we continually end up being turned over by dodgy VAR decisions.
At least a couple of posters called it in the pre-game thread that we would get beaten by a dodgy penalty decision.
All very frustrating as once again we played very well especially in the second half.
We've been amazing since the lockdown.
Onwards and upwards UTV.

What are you on about? If, by “attention” you mean I like to participate and talk about my favorite football team, Aston Villa, and discuss it with others like everybody else on this forum, then I guess I like the “attention.” 🙄

The problem is having played and watched football most of my life I don’t know what the laws are anymore.
It is impossible to tell if Pogba initiated contact, I suspect he did. The refs are all over the place, Mctominey spent the whole game fouling Grealish and then Matic is bought on to use his 4 fouls up to stop Grealish.
Oliver used to be a decent ref but he is just another compromised cop out merchant and gave us nothing.
But we have come to expect this, everybody associated with that horrible club will get up this morning believing that the order has been restored and sadly it has.

ChicagoLion,

I know it is cheese and chalk to some degree, but replay works far more often than not in American football (which I assume you are able to view with some consistency). The pass interference issue in the NFL a couple years back might be the exception, but I am uncertain why the PL cannot find a way to train refs in such a way as to get something approximating the uniformity seen in replay decisions in American football (not suggesting it is perfect; maybe you do not agree that it is any better?).

If, and it’s a big if, we can keep Jack for the next two or three years, we’ll be one of those clubs that get these decisions most of the time, and everyone else will hate us.

On the penalty, my initial reaction was it was one, and I still think that. Luiz was too close, Pogba had edged ahead of him, he was taking a huge chance. As for using var, on this occasion I don't think there was any better place to judge it from than the referee's viewpoint in real time.

I am 59 years old and to young to remember a match against Manchester United in which we have not been screwed. Same old, same old.

We are clearly improving as a team. We just need a bit more anger. All our players should have been in the refs ear and demanded he went to the monitor.

If we had of been awarded a penalty like that, Man Utd players would have almost carried the ref to the monitor.  >:(

The Var lot are the ones who usually initiate the ref goes to the monitor. This Var team deemed it a penalty straight away. The commentators too. On first viewing I can see why it was given as well. But given VAR’s performance to date I’m very surprised the incident wasn’t studied much longer as in, studied to the point that it actually wasn’t a pen.

I am hugely encouraged by our progress so far this season but our record against Manchester United is truly appalling. i might have dreamt this but I think we have only won once in over 30 games.

Some thoughts:

- They were scared of us tonight. The fact that they had several players whose job was mainly to foul Jack (and others) is testament to the the threat we pose to even the top teams now. Matic could/should have been off for the number of blatant professional fouls he had in such a short space of time.

- We need other options for the central striker role. Ollie does a lot of things really well - he occupies 2 defenders and creates space even when he doesn't win the aerial duels - but the lack of goals is starting to get to him, I think. Wesley's not going to be match ready for a month or two (and even then might not be the answer) so we should really be trying to get an experienced striker on loan for the rest of the season (easier said than done). I reckon Ollie would get more goals on the right of the three as it's often the wide players that the genuine chances fall to.

- Long-term, we need an upgrade on Mings. He's just too error-prone for a team that is aiming to be top six. We need a rock like Ogbonna/Saiss/Vestergaard as our senior centre back. No player like that would be cheap, but a more reliable defender would save us many points per season. And probably bury a few more headers too.

- We have come a hell of a long way in the past year. We are now a genuinely exciting team that uses the ball well, and can threaten in numerous ways.

- I hope that we rest a number of players in the FA Cup and that we batter Spurs on the 13th!

Obviously very Unlucky not to get anything from the game ,but we should be making more of our chances when we have them ,but I'm not proud  that's going backwards again ,we lost let's get on with it but let's not settle for being proud we have become a bloody good side and like I said in a  previous  post our next couple of signings we tell us where we are going
