We’ve made massive strides in recent months, and with one or two good buys we’ll continue on this trajectory. Disappointed tonight, yes of course but massively optimistic for the future.

Yeah when it dropped to Davis at the end you’re thinking ah, anyone else!  Villa were pretty good today though. I’m only really annoyed by the penalty. With VAR they had a chance to make it right, but I knew it wouldn’t get over turned.

I thought it was a terrific performance, our football is great to watch and we equalled them all over the pitch. Never a penalty in a million years, Pogba trips himself. Matic was brought on to kick Jack and nothing more. I’m really proud of us and love watching us again. Hopefully we’ll rest the vast majority of the team now, Ollie in particular looks like he needs it

If we can cut out the daft errors and some of the naivety, bring in upgrades over the next 12 months for a couple of areas, we will be a terrific side.  Pushed United all the way and I hate the thought of us being 'plucky little Villa' so I won't moan about the penalty or the cynical fouling which broke up our forward play in the second half.  We needed to take our chances, of which there were plenty. Had we have been at 100% tonight, we would have won the game.  United had to be at 100% to win it.  Frustrated to lose but well pleased with how far we have come in being frustrated to lose the way we did tonight!

It’s impossible to tell if Luiz clips Pogba or Pogba trips himself but Oliver was very close so saw and heard enough to be convinced. Slow motion is inconclusive but not enough to get it reviewed.

He let them get away with cynical fouls in the second half for too long though.
Slow motion conclusively shows Pogba trips himself

Frustrating is the word. Can’t be arsed talking about the penalty as it’s been said. I thought smiths interview was very honest, we were off the pace a bit first half. Second half I’d say for the majority we were the better side. But we have to take our chances, Mings should of scored, Watkins should of done better with the second header, thought it was a good save for the first header. I think the wingers are putting a shift in, but it’s a not a natural part of Traore a game to support the full back. I think El Ghazi has definitely upped his work rate and was unlucky that wan Bissaka made that good clearance. However, grealish in the middle linking up with El Ghazi on the left doesn’t work as well as Barckley in the middle and grealish on the left.
The cups a difficult one now as I’m sure lots of us would love a cup run and we might need to win the cup or wulify for Europe to keep hold of grealish. But we do need to rest some. Watkins needs a rest, but it feels like that we basically surrendering having  Davis as our man striker against Liverpool, and I like Davis.

Am I over-reacting thinking that Bailly should have seen red for the two-footed jumping challenge aimed at McGinn ?

Yes you are

Strange kind of game. Mixed from end to end at times and then testimonial pace at others. Very open game and easy to play in. First half, we get done at end by an average cross from AWB! that Mings makes a terrible decision on. We get back into the game quickly, with arguably our worst player on the night scoring. Farce of a penalty but Luiz gone done far too easily anyway. Rode our luck a bit at times before finishing very strongly. We had any amount of decent chances to equalise tonight Watkins (3), Mings, Davis, AEG but just didn't fall for us.

Martinez 7, got lucky with one party but sharp apart from that
Cash 7, excellent cross in first half, didn't get much support from Traore defensively and finished strongly
Konsa 7, classy defender, excellent clearance near end showing Mings up again
Mings 5 - terrible decision to go with his head for that cross, continues to cost us goals
Targett 6 - solid enough defensively
Luiz 6 - good first half but was poor to get turned for the peno and didn't shield our box that well
McGinn 6 - excellent first half but disappeared in second, shoved out wide for a finish
Traore 5 - lucky to see the second half, the goal gave his at least one additional point
Jack 9 - best player on pitch by a long way, ran the second half . Excellent assist and numerous other chances. Ref didn't protect him either
Watkins 5 - confidence low, missed three big chances. Touch poor again. At least getting into the positions still but needs a goal badly

Ramsey 5 - very little impact
Davis 6 - story of his Villa career, put himself about, smart header and then the chance at the end could have made him a hero....super block mind

Frustrated not to come away with something shows how much we have improved. Lots of positives but also things to work on. Our set pieces and delivery but surely Mings needs to run onto things not just be in a standing position

Also did anyone think Maguire handled at the end before the Davis shot because I did but no VAR check of course

Added to the fact Pogba told Shaw off for not diving just before hand, I think we can safely say he tripped himself and it wasn't a penalty.

That first challenge by Matic on Jack was an absolute nail on yellow, I don’t care if it was his first foul.

As soon as i saw who the referee was tonight i knew were were in for a rough deal  This useless idiot who failed to see the Sheffield Utd goal is also the one who overturned the pen against Brighton  He is weak and games i see him in he always favours the so called bigger club As others have said no way would that pen have been given at the other end of the pitch

I thought it was a fair result, we played very well but they looked a threat throughout. They have very good technical players. The pen was soft and they’re always going to get those. They get pens, lots of them, it’s what they do.  Watkins should have done better with the 2nd chance he had. Mings should have hit the target with the header he had. I’m very proud of them to a man.
