if we play that game with our first pick 11 we win
Any changes at all the team is weaker
we had at least 4 last night that’s why we struggled

it’s as simple as that

Of the five regulars that were absent from last night, three of them haven't scored this season, so I don't think they'd have helped with our slipshod finishing. If Grealish can't score playing as a '10' then I've little reason to think Barkley would've done better with the same chances. I'd say the only one that might have been more likely to score, all things being the same, would've been Konsa with that header Hause had.

Overall play-wise, I was pretty happy with that Villa 'B' team display last night.
Fair enough
I still maintain we win that game with our first team 11
lack of quality cost us against a bottom 3 club imo
John, that was our first home-game point in 4 games.
Just saying.

I think the encouraging thing, despite the underwhelming results of late, is that we continue to be creative and positive in every game.
We have a similar problem to Leeds - create bags of chances but have trouble finishing them - hopefully we can turn the corner like they did recently and bang in 5 against WBA! Our league fixtures between Boxing Day and 27th of Jan (when we play Burnley again ???) are very tough so we need to start capitalizing on our good approach play ASAP.

I can't understand the negativity aimed at Traore. He was a solid 7 last night. He's classy on the ball and while he could be said to be a bit of a luxury player he still put a shift in. He deserves a lot of credit for tracking their player right into our area for a clearance following Ming's error. I thought Jack looked magic in patches in the No 10 role and he's just a couple of goals away from being devastating in that role. And a mention for Martinez. There's a kind of relaxed confidence in our defenders that I haven't seen for years and it's largely down to him.6 clean sheets from 11 games is phenomenal especially after the years where we've suffered far too many humiliating defeats.

I think you're right actually, I was surprised how often Traore helped to defend and that tracking back into our box was great. Smith really has got the team working for each other.

I's also like to add that it's great that we're disappointed with a 0-0 draw and 27 shots had, for years we'd have been happy with that as it meant we hadn't lost.
I thought it was his best game for us and he did work back. That clearance from Mings mistake was excellent and I cheered that like us scoring. We have to remember he hasn’t had much game time with us either.

I like Ollie Watkins a lot but last night we were crying out for a Tammy Abraham style clinical finisher.

I felt last night, by-and-large we played incredibly well.  There was only one team ever going to win that game, and any other day we would've hammered them.  But for whatever reason, it didn't quite click up front and we've come away with a single point rather than the 3pts we deserved.  It happens.

My gut feeling is that we're on the cusp of seeing something really special, and last night - even though it didn't go quite as you'd hope - was pretty much proof of that.  In the normal run of things we'd have utterly demolished them.

Very frustrating game but we are making progress game by game. Burnley are a horrible niggly team, thank God we don’t have to watch them every week. They remind me of Stoke but going further back Bolton, horrible anti football teams. Anyway considering we had 4/5 replacements I was quite impressed that we produced such a good performance, everyone knows their place and part to play in the overall team when asked to step in. It’s still the youngest team in the league so we need to be a bit more patient with this team as I’m sure it’s the beginning of something exciting

I'm not sure any of the gimme's fell to Watkins, so how would Tammy have made a difference?  Still would have had El Ghazi, jack and Traore in the same positions missing the same chances?  I wouldn't say Watkins had the type of service Tammy would thrive on all night.

Thought the pitch was a bit bobbly. Also don't much like this Premier League ball.

One of the frustrating things about last night's performance was the number of short corner routines that went nowhere.  On the rare occasions when a corner was put straight into the box we looked dangerous (as when Hause hit the post, which immediately led to another corner, which we took short and ended up in a cul de sac).  I may be wrong, but I think it may have been from one of these routines in the first half that led to Mings fannying around in a failed attempt to keep us on the offensive, and in turn a dangerous breakaway).  I'm not saying fling the ball into the box from every corner, but last night the short corners were poorly executed and overdone.

Considering we're not short of skill these days, our corners are awful. I'd be tempted to give the fullbacks a try at them, can't imagine they'd be much worse.

Probably not the right thread to be on, but wondered what people thought of the Amazon coverage? Not up to Skys level at the moment imo and I actually miss the crowd effects that Sky put on. (Having said that I think it is brilliant to watch a game where there are fans back - breath of fresh air). Pretty sure Amazon will get it right though, although picture quality is going to be an issue for them.

You can turn the effects on and off. If you click the little speaker icon for Audio & Languages, it gives you the choice of English, which has the added effects, or Stadium, which is just the natural sound in the ground.

Who are their pundits? Micah Richards and Gary Lineker hogging another channel? Wish someone random like Barry Venison would turn up to analyse expertly.

I was still doing tea at kick-off, I'm only watching the start now. Twelve minutes in, we could've been out of sight with even the faintest more aplomb. Traore getting into shape quicker, Watkins hitting the defender, Watkins not finding Grealish, El Ghazi hitting Mings.

Jim Beglin (ex Liverpool) was the co-commentator.  He seemed ok.
