With V.A.R taking 5 minutes to confirm obvious penalties these days. I would choose experience. Ollie looked nervous with all the hanging around waiting. So Jack or Ross for me.
exactly. Saw his face when he was waiting to take it and the keeper was out to the spot and thought: ‘fk, he’s gonna miss this’

When the captain throws you the ball though, what can you do? Grealish did it for the last one when he hadn’t scored for a while to get him a goal which I thought was a good move. I think they should wait to see if it goes to VAR before deciding.

Barry didn’t miss many.

Remember that one he didn’t take but no one can remember why?

Robbie Keane was brilliant at them as well. Only remember him missing one for Ireland (Slovakia away under Trap).

Francis Lee was good at getting them and scoring them.

Quote
In the 1971–72 season, Lee set a British record for the number of penalties scored in a season, with 15 of his 35 goals scored from the penalty spot. Many of the penalties resulted from fouls on Lee, earning him the nickname Lee One Pen. Some journalists, holding the opinion that Lee gained a number of penalties by diving, used the name Lee Won Pen instead. Lee's name is often cited in debates about diving in football; referees' chief Keith Hackett described him as a player who "had a reputation of falling down easily".

By 1975 he was at Derby winning them but Charlie George was scoring them.

Penalty 40 seconds into video here, thereafter he is in discussions with Norman Hunter.

Top Five penalty takers jn the Premier  are Shearer  with 55 second Lampard 43,Gerrard 32,Le Tissier 24 and Henry 22

Actually they are the top scorers
The top 5 penalty takers statistically are

Yaya Toure 11/11
Dimitar Berbatov 9/9
Rickie Lambert 7/7
Jan Molby 7/7
*Garry Parker 6/6 *
Elano 6/6
Stephen Hunt 6/6
Clive WIlson 6/6
Graham Alexander 6/6

I learnt in a lockdown quiz that Yaya Toure was and is the best ever premier league penalty taker.
He had the best 100% record 11/11 !

I guessed Henry because I couldn't imagine the man missing one.

* Gary Parker i don't know him but he played for Villa under Ron Atkinson during start of Premier league season. Did he take any for Villa

Julian Dicks scored 15/15 in the Premier League.

Best penalty takers i have seen in all the years of watching Villa are Stan the Wham Lynn and Willie Anderson I don't recall either missing many if any at all
Willie Anderson missed at least one: skied well over the bar at Fellows Park on 2nd Jan, 1971 in a very wet 3-0 defeat to Walsall in Division Three.

That Walsall game was my first away match and they murdered us. My recollection as a nipper was that he put it several yards wide and it hit the wall behind the goal.

Basic error, his body shape was wrong, leaning back, and is right knee was not over the ball so it had to go high.

Looked like he kind of tried to side foot it into the top corner. As you say he looked to be leaning back a bit, didn’t get properly over it. To be fair, I probably wouldn’t have even hit the cross bar- was always shit at penalties. Plus I’d have been shitting it more. With the VAR delay I think they should decide who wants it only after it’s definitely been awarded. You might feel bang up for it 30 secs after it’s initially been given. But after 4 mins to think about it?

The Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier has an incredible record and had a conversion rate of over 95%. He scored 48 penalties out of 49 taken and is regarded as the best penalty taker by current as well as past players.
Ricky Lambert scored 47 from 50 attempts; Shearer hit 56 from 62; Lampard 43 from 50; Gerrard 32 from 41.
Van Basten, Zlatan, C Ronaldo are also considered rather good too.

In the title season, Sid took the pens. The odd one was missed/saved.

The previous season's spot-kicker was Allan Evans, who was a striker at Dunfirmline when signed. I don't recall Allan ever missing one. Am I right about this?
