It's some thought that this team has one of, if not the lowest average ages in the league. They're only going to grow together more over the next few years, be added to and the youth structure is likely going to be adding to it over the next few years. Exciting times.

Just been debating SJM's disallowed goal on Sky Sports, ex ref Dermott Gallagher has said correct decision, he thinks as Barkley interfered with Leno's vision, the fact that the goalie wouldn't have saved the shot is irrelevant. Bonkers

... yeah, and with an exciting crop of youngsters to add into the mix as this current squad mature.

I thought it was offside. The rules can only judge if he is interferring with play, not  if the goalie would save it. And he was definitely standing in line between McGinn and the goalkeeper. The problem I have is just Var. Even when it gets the decision right it destroys the fun and excitement of the game.

Slightly off topic but I really hope we take the FA Cup very seriously this year. With the fixture conjestion your Liverpools/Man Citys etc. will probably take it even less seriously than usual. We've already proven we can beat anybody in the country on our day and I think we'd have a real chance in it this season if we play the strongest possible side from round three.

The 3rd round is in the middle of a tough run of fixtures Chelsea, Man United and Spurs all around it.

What's tough about that? We're Aston Villa.

Not had time to read thru the thread but two observations - the Beeb now reports assists under the goalscorers on their website. Why isn't Targett acknowledged for the first goal? It's left blank, is it because the goal was an OG? Shit reasoning if so.

And second, while I admire the impudence of it, Jack clearly barged their player (Tierney?) for the last goal, to make sure he wouldn't make a challenge. If that was against us, I'd be shouting for a free kick. Not VARable but I'm surprised Atkinson missed it.

I watched the game last night and thought all 11 were excellent, had a look at the match thread on here to see comments like McGinn is playing abysmally, Matty Targett is struggling to kick the ball today, Cash is a worry. Just goes to show the many differnet views on a game of football.

While Jack, Barkley and Watkins take the headlines, for me it was the industry in midfield that put us on the front foot. SJM and Luiz especially were brilliant in breaking up play, when one tried and failed the other was there to put a foot in and take the ball, it was non-stop giving Arsenal very little time to build anything. Against Leeds and Southampton we couldn't get near them, last night we were in their faces, hunting in packs, just getting a toe on it before another Villa player was there to steal possession. Every 50/50, every second ball was ours, boy did they work hard not only physically but in supporting each other.

As others have mentioned, we looked so much fitter than the previous two games, none more so than SJM who looked sluggish but last night probably ran back to Brum as he had so much energy to spare. Overall, a brilliant team performance.

I agree Mark.  When watching good Premier League teams over the last fews when we've mostly been shit, I used to think that fast, incisive, skilful football with movement off the ball was from another planet.  For too many years we've been slow, lacking in movement, even from a simple throw in, and a million years from the sort of football we watch the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal play.  Last night we not only played football like that, we were actually better at it than they were.  Much better in fact.

We absolutely took the piss there.

I've been a bit peed off that various highlight reels and shows didn't pick this move up from the very beginning.

There's a wonderful time-stopped-still moment where what looks like the entire arsenal side and half of ours are all stood completely motionless as Barkley holds the ball, the only movement in the entire scene being when Targett recognises his cue and bursts beyond them.

But do you know what, if we were in the ground, I guarantee I'd still have some tw*t near me going "STOP F*CKING ABOUT".

Ita such a brilliant feeling sending my 5 year old off to school on the back of another brilliant result. Especially as his mates' teams, ManUre, Bindippers, Sheffields Utd and Weds are all a bit average (Bindippers against us at any rate).

I'd think we're becoming far more attractive a transfer proposal for players now too.

Just get in. I jumped off the sofa in delight when that 3rd went in, I felt it was safe then! We're on the way up.
