How can this possibly work if Norwich’s wage bill one of the lowest is still £28m?  I assume clubs would get time to fall in line with it.  Or will clubs get round it with bonuses etc.

But isn't the whole idea of parachute payments there to assist relegated clubs who are already committed to spending way above the limits they are proposing?

I think it's a dreadful idea, restraint of trade and will dumb down the competitiveness of what is just about the best second tier in world football.  If you do it for the EFL, why not do it for the Premier Division and stop the lack of problems being created (through relegation) at source?

Maybe they should, y,know, only pay the wages each individual club can afford according to thier finances. Didn't work too badly for the first 100 of so years

Always been clubs richer than others. And if you think players weren't getting paid under the table in the old days or getting perks, then i think you're being naïve. Why the hell would any player uproot his family and move hundreds of miles just to be on exactly the same money?

I'm not entirely against the idea in principal, but this won't be done "on principal", it'll be inspired by some bitter no marks like Middlesbrough, desperate to find a way to fuck Villa over. Having a vote now would be ludicrous, Leeds get a vote but Norwich don't? Holding it before next season's Championship clubs are confirmed can only be an attempt to gerrrmander the vote and stop Villa having a say.

Given covid and how much clubs are struggling in efl leagues - cant see any of them agreeing to moves that could make their lives even more challenging for next season

Conveniently, Middlesborough's annual wage bill for players is £15.6m.  This will just lead to more splits and a PL2 in my view.

Whilst I can see a point to some kind of cap this boils down to how do we screw over the newly relegated clubs without the long term thinking that at some point it could be one of them.

Alot has been made of Fulham and our spending , but less so about Norwhich.They spent pretty much nothing so they could protect themselves if they went down but in doing so gave themselves no chance of staying up and for the past month or so have just been hopeless.

Bringing in a rule like this would lead to more clubs going up acting like Norwich ..more concerned about going back down then doing anything to be competitive in a higher league
