Just a few observations about today:
We all need to get used to close games like this for a while. These are the ones that will keep us above the bottom 3.
Jack was outstanding the best I've seem him at Villa Park this season.
We wouldn't have won if Targett hadn't played
VAR as it stands is a shambles

I was really impressed with Maupay today.  He didn't give our defence a second's rest and looked really bright all game.  Reminded me a bit of Carbone the way he plays.

Agreed looked a very good player, mobile, great touch and was an impressive outlet for them when they went down to 10. Made a mug of Engels at one stage in the second half.

Yes I was very impressed with Maupay. His runs and collections in the channels were very scary. And he was a constant irritation by all means available to him.

I think a word of gratitude is needed for Heaton, it was his little dinked header over the Brighton player that started the move that led to the winner.

Maupay’s hairstyle is a constant irritation.

here's my obvs

they played us off the park while it was 11 v 11
Grealish is the best player in the world
Wesley should have been subbed off a lot earlier
VAR is shit (that coming from someone who was in favour at first)
needed them 3 points as we will get zero from the next two
Thought Maupay looked impressive, maybe I was wrong in thinking he was a white haired Hogan
would like to see Smith react earlier to what's happening in front of him
nothing like a last minute winning goal

Weird today. I didn't think we played that well but we didn't deserve to lose either. I said to a mate around 15 mins to go 'I can see us scoring a last minute goal' so that was nice.

Good to see Targett score because I thought he was our worse player to be honest. Marvellous three points though and much needed.

I can’t say I was impressed by Maupay, I liked him at Brentford and hoped we’d try and get him but I thought we handled him very comfortably.

Liked the 6 and the 13 for them

I wasn’t impressed either. He’s busy, but puts in mind of an overpriced Paul Dickov.

Great result in terms of achieving 3 valuable points. Well done boys! Second half was more tense than it should have been. There were times when I wondered which team had the 10 men and we looked a little lethargic. A great finish to the game though.
Disappointed with yet another steward in upper holte today. They certainly do themselves no favours at all.
Finally VAR is sh€t and is ruining the game for the paying supporter in real time and we always seem to get sh€t refs.

We were above Man United early games of 1995-96 too. We won first two, they lost one. Much longer spell above them in 1998-99 when we led the table up to January.

Let’s not define ourselves against one team only. It’s very small time.

Especially as they are nowhere near the team they were - even when we were last in top league

Great photo.

Indeed. Not long home. And fickle person that I am, looking forward to MOTD.

Well, Brighton have still never won at VP, but we were fortunate.

For the third time this season, we failed to handle playing against 10, and again the management didn't react to the opposition changes. We should be able to adapt and take the game to the opposition in those circumstances.

The only time we played well against 10 was at the end of he first half; whatever was discussed at half time had little impact.

We played at such a slow tempo after the break that it played into their hands. I also didn't get taking off Hourihane who was our biggest goal threat,  yet Wesley stayed on again for too long with little effect.

We weren't. They were, in that they faced a team that still struggle their bollocks off when it comes to putting ten men to the sword. I think we got exactly what we deserved, a narrow win against an organised and effective side that had been reduced in number by their own actions. They subbed the 22 before he had the opportunity to make it 11v9.

If Jack has gone down like the rest of the ponces do when they wind blows they’d have been down to 9. I still don’t why he wasn’t sent off anyway. Not like it suddenly wasn’t a foul just because the player didn’t go down.

All about perception I suppose.

First time I’ve seen a Villa match since the play off final.

The quality of football is so much better now. Villa Park looked awesome in the autumn sunshine.

Today Brighton did what I'd like us to do more often. On paper they played a fairly straight forward 442 but what actually happened is Maupay played 10 yards behind Connolly and then Mooy and Gross (can't be bothered to add the funny character) tucked in alongside him so Targett and Guilbert were forced to tuck in slightly to look after them. That gave their fullbacks had loads of space to run into, Targett struggled more than Guilbert because their right back is decent but the leftback was an out of position centre half who didn't have the pace or quality to take advantage of it. It's a great way of playing against 433 because you can overload the defensive midfielder and force the opposition wide players deeper.
