Chelsea away New Years Day 1990 was a small following. I think the support was in the 100's rather than 1000"s. A bitter freezing day, made better by  3-0 win.

There was plenty of time in the mid-80s when the away terrace would have at best a few hundred on it. I remember being at Roker Park for the penultimate away game of the 84/85 season and I doubt there were 200 other Villa fans there.

Feeling good that I was at Everton for the 3rd round match and Chelsea 1990, but both were relatively decent turn outs I thought. Nadir must have been mid 80's as you can't really count the pre-division 3 days. My guess would be a few trips to Newcastle. Certainly never ventured there myself! Weren't many at Boro in the championship season and it was bloody freezing in the snow.

If my memory is correct I think there were very sparse away ends at Selhurst Park for Charlton away Easter Monday 1987 (I think the attendance in the ground that day was under 6,000) and for Huddersfield away in the pissing rain early on the following season. They are the two occasions I recall being in the away end and it being mostly empty.

Just checked the attendances and Charlton was 5,595 and Huddersfield was 6,884. David Hunt is credited with the only goal of the game at Huddersfield. My memory of it is that Steve Hunt scored the goal 'early doors' at the away end.

I think the lowest crowd I have been part of for a competitive game at Villa Park was Bradfrord in the Simod Cup in 1987 when they beat us 5-0 and we couldn't handle the problems Ian Ormondroyd caused us. I am guessing SGT later signed him mainly based on that game. Apparently 4,217 was the attendance that night.

Maybe he was thinking of a midweek game we played there when BFR was in charge. I think we lost 2-0 and Townsend and Vinnie Jones scored for them. I don't think we took that many that night. In fact I think the total attendance might have only been about 14,000-15,000.

Just looked it up. I was right about the score and the scorers but the attendance was 17,182.

I seem to remember going to that game and getting completely hammered with a Chelsea supporting mate, forgetting I was supposed to be driving home when I got back to Wolverhampton.

I was at St James's in the 86/87 relegation season and it was bloody freezing!   I've just found this on YouTube and there was more there than I remember (I think I can spot my brother when we equalize, but not me or my mate - and we were were standing together.)   At the end, we were kept in for ages and then asked how we were getting home.   A number of us said by train and we were given a lift back to Newcastle Central Station in the back of a police transit.

My memory of Palace away in the early 90s were that there was plenty of standing space, think it was a 0-0 too.

Chelsea, 1985 I think. Rearranged game. Bumped into a kid at Euston who I vaguely remembered being in the year below me at my school. Me and him made up about a quarter of our following that night, so my memory tells me anyway.

We had some really big crowds around the turn of the year in 1989-1990.  We beat Manure 3-0 on Boxing Day in front of 41,247 and even got 36,532 against Port Vale in the FA Cup fourth round.

I wonder how many fans we took to Reykjavik, Berlin and Kiev, the last of which was moved to Simferopol in the Crimea.

How many went to Tokyo for the intercontinental cup?

When I first started going to away games in 2000 there was never any doubt you'd get a ticket and very few I was at were sold out. Smallest gathering I recall was winning at Elland Road a couple of days before Christmas 2000. We were in the corner bit and definitely not full.
