If Nakamba could pass the ball after he has won it we could be looking at a very good player

Like today where he completed 27 of 28 passes with a 96.4% accuracy rate?

I've just seen that it certainly didn't feel like that. I think I've focused on the one he gave away.

Nakamba was very good today I think and Gerrard will consider him a useful player.

Not sure why he is rubbished on a regular basis, he was the only defensive midfielder today and did just fine, his passing has been in question in the past but surely not today.

I like him. I like his energy and he was very good today.

We still need better in that position, but I wouldn't be crazy about selling him (and def not for the figures touted). He does what he does better than anyone else currently on the books.

If we do manage to get someone in, let's try to embrace the weird notion of squad depth.

I have a feeling that McGinn and Luiz will need rotating this season anyway, with their summer schedules on the back of the last two weird seasons.

Really, that’s surprised me

I thought he looked far better when we upped the tempo a bit and pressed them, then he regained possession quite a few times as he’s pretty quick over 5-10 yards.

When we have the ball maybe he’s got the reputation he’s got because, even though he doesn’t give it away, he looks like he’s going to. He did well yesterday but I still think it might be the first position looked at for an upgrade, as it should have been in the summer.

People question Nakamba's passing largely because he's only ever gonna pass it sideways. There have been occasions he's got caught on the ball in past games, but with regular game time that'll drop. He's in one of the most thankless roles a team has. He's not making the last ditch CH tackles. He's not gonna score or make goals. If he goes by unnoticed he's doing his job well. But he wouldnt be the first anchorman who gets shredded for every misplaced pass.
Maybe we need an upgrade with someone who can carry the ball and transition us forward better, but if we can get our balance right in midfield, and Nakamba is the one to do the quiet work (and allow SJM more license forward) so be it. He's the only player we have who can do it. Ahead of him, we can hopefully get more consistency from two of SJM/Luiz/Ramsey/Carney and maybe Sanson (if he can reattached his legs).

I think the whole team was told to be a lot tighter in possession yesterday, and not give the ball away stupidly. Only Super John didn't seem to get the memo, but he was great again so we'll let him off. Nakamba just did the simple things well, and wasn't it his pass to Young that started our attack that led to the first goal?

This doesn’t count the times he did the hard part by winning the ball, only to have it taken back off him before he tried a pass. I actually quite like him, but can we afford to give him a run of games to iron out his obvious deficiencies? It’s absolutely the right position we need to fill in January if possible

He's good at his specialist area, and his distribution (and the movement of the person receiving it) need to be better.

Really?! Maybe he did make those passes, but that performance is not what I saw from the Trinity yesterday. Kept making tackles then hesitating and holding onto it for too long and getting the ball stolen off him again.

Do think it could be a confidence thing, so maybe we do just give him a run in the team to find his feet? That probably does mean leaving out either Ramsay or Luis though.

It's infuriating! He's really good at winning the ball back, gives away very few free kicks in doing what he does, and he's shown he's more than capable of giving the ball to a teammate. But so often he gets his pocket picked in the instant after he's just done it to the opposition. He needs to develop a trick, a roll, a step, something he can instinctively deploy once he's won the ball that will give him that crucial split second to move the ball to somewhere safe so's he can get his head up.

I thought he did quite well but we need better in there. If you're going to become a possession side then 37% of it at home shows we're a way off. - its not like we scored early and they were chasing the game. I mean possession isn't everything as the scoreline shows but still....
