He has 21 months left on his current deal apparently and the buy back clause has expired with Man City

I'm not quite sure what kind of midfielder Douglas is for us to be honest. Apart from scoring a couple of times in the first season back in the Prem I can't recall him being involved in chances created or assists and he's not a solid defensive midfielder type.

It strikes me that he is better suited to a ball control, possession based approach rather than the counter attacking style that we have.

In short I'm not sure that we can bring out the best in Douglas as we don't play to his strengths.

I thought he was amazing during “project re-start” and did more than anyone to keep us up.  A genuine DMC.
He’s not consistently reached those heights again but I still think he’s currently top half PL standard.

He’s ideal at the base of a three or in a double pivot when his partner is a defensive beast.

Give him a five year deal.  He will only get better.

To my mind he's started to improve that quiet 'right place, right time' ability which means he doesn't have to make the big tackle or the showy pass. It might be a case of figuring out which other midfielder is best placed to take advantage. I'd say McGinn or Sanson who both have the ability to move the ball forward if they can make themselves available for a quick pass from Doug.

Surprised this thread had dropped off the first page.

I thought he had a great game today, exactly the sort of disruptive, tempo setting performance we've been missing for the last 8-9 months. He gave the ball away a bit more than I'd like but Doucoure and Allan is a fantastic pair of defensive midfielders so it's no surprise. What was great is that he played them at their own game and came out well on top.

On top of a cracking performance anyway his pass for Cash to open the scoring was exceptional, weighted so Cash had no choice to make but to run through and take on the shot and had Digne and Keane both caught on their heels. I liked that once Nakamba came on he seamlessly switched into the more wandering role that McGinn plays and started popping up all over the pitch, shows he's a really smart player.

Yeah, he’s been very good this season, looks back to his best. That pass was pure class.

That pass to Cash, as good as the goal itself.

Fantastically weighted, and on his wrong foot.  Great goal.  Something tells me that Matty Cash was quite pleased!
