Thinking the same hilts but midfield looks lightweight, I’d have Conor over O’Hare. Thought RHM was very good in that second half even if he got caught with the ball a few times.
Yeah that was a toss up to be fair.  I went with Callum because he was always busy, and Conor's set pieces weren't quite on the money.

Some nice touches from Wesley, good assist for the otherwise really ineffective Hogan.  The centre of midfield is a concern.  Hourihane's distribution was poor from set pieces and Lansbury flits in and out of games.  I hope that the Luiz deal goes through but my main concern is the whilst I think the first 11 is good enough, there isn't a massive amount behind it.  I expect Jota, Hause, Engels/Konsa, Elmo, Kodjia on the bench but injuries like we had at times last season, could be really damaging.

Jack signing off with a 'God bless'. He's certainly a character.

'Mings pings' was another favourite, as was listening to him taking about himself in the third person.

Up the Villa!

Certainly no change in style from JW since he's been away.

Is he still working for Derby as well ?

So who's your composite XI from that lot?

                 Steer
Guilbert  Mings  Hause  Targett
  Grealish McGinn O'Hare
       Jota Wesley RHM

Thinking the same hilts but midfield looks lightweight, I’d have Conor over O’Hare. Thought RHM was very good in that second half even if he got caught with the ball a few times.

No mention of Engels (?) , I'm convinced he will play a holding role  in midfield........................Godzvilla

Where's Chester gone?

He was there at the end

Yeah saw that but for the last minute or so we were passing it around at the back and he was nowhere to be seen and Lansbury was effectively filling in for him. Hopefully it's nothing, was just wondering if someone had seen him go over the bench or something.

He’d slipped into LB when Targett moved forward on 88, so I assume the camera just didn’t catch him the rest of the way. He looked fine
He walked off with about 5 minutes left. Did not look happy, perhaps he is still carrying the injury.

Thought Jota in the first half looked excellent. For £4m that could be a fantastic bit of business. With Guilbert overlapping, him cutting in off the right works really well. I have a feeling that could be a really good combination this season for us - contrasts with AEG and (hopefully) Trezeguet's direct pace/dribbling. You can see that our best players (Jack, SJM, Mings etc) trust him on the ball, which is a great sign.

Wes looked excellent also - not just a hold-up man, ran in behind, had a few good efforts, excellent link up play, fantastic assist. Could be a really good focal point around which our attacking players can float.

The most important signing of the summer (apart from Mings) could be Douglas though - the centre of midfield looks so light, we really need a quality player in between Jack and SJM who can run the game and release them both - so Jack doesn't have to drop too deep to do that himself. Am really anxious that we get that one over the line ASAP. Could be akin to when Wolves got Neves.

This might be heresy, but I'm not sure SJM is going to be good enough for the Premier League.  Hope I'm wrong.

Not necessarily knocking it - we'll see - but what is it about him that makes you think he won't be?

If you look at many central midfielders particularly in the bottom half of the league, he's not lacking in any quality. Feel like he'd be in with a shout of getting into most midfields outside of the top 8 maybe. Also young and will improve.

O'Hare needs a loan, plenty of times ball was taken off him too easily. Just hasn't got that speed of thought currently so think loan will help him in that regard.

All of our players need to adjust to the pace of the new league. SJM needs to up to speed and fitness. It’s a big step up

One word to sum up the new players ; Tidy.
Specifically;
Wesley - A real presence, and he made RHM look good and got Hogan a goal. If he make those look good imagine how good El Ghazi, Jota, poss Trezeguet will look.
Guilbert - Good footballer, maybe a right hand version of Amavi which would be no bad thing if he's luckier with injuries.
Jota - Skillfull and thoughtful.
Targett - Composed
Konsa - Possibly the best of the lot, he certainly doesn't look his age, very strong and intelligent defender, looks like he's been playing years.

I am aware of the opposition but I was impressed with them individually.

Thought it was a good run out today however some of the fans near me need to give their head a wobble. Shouting at players to track back and close down in a preseason friendly and then not celebrating the goal ‘because hogan scored’
