I’m so pleased to have him back and it was great to see him play like that last night after such a terrible injury.

He’s a Villa legend in my eyes, from the moment he arrived here he’s been such an inspirational person to have around, on and off the pitch. A great player and such a likeable man.

I missed his first game back after injury and I was really gutted to read about his error, it took the shine off his comeback. Some of the stick he got was awful.

Well said
I really like him but the word legend gets bandied about too easily.

That’s why I said he’s a Villa legend in “my eyes”. Not just for his performances on the pitch for us, but his what he does off it and also his determination to be where he is now from where he started. Its one hell of a story and an inspiration to all.

John Terry was a fantastic player at Chelsea. I might be in the minority, though I thought he was average at best for us.

He continually dropped off deep so he was less exposed (leaving even more ground for the 'dynamic' Whelan to cover in front of him) and he wasn't even our best CB when he had to compete. Chester was (IMO) head and shoulders better than him.

There ... I've said it. I might get pelters but I feel better for saying it. UTV

I'll protect you from the pelters
keep the vampires from the helter-skelters
when the chips are down I'll be around
with my undying, death-defying hate for "JT"

Fuck John Terry, frankly.

JT was superb for us . We were lucky to have him with the club on its knees.
He played a pivotal role in the turnaround.

Cahill doesn’t get a mention I see. Okay, he was sold off by MON who wouldn’t know a good central player from a bad one but he could have been something really special for us. The overhead goal he scored and who it was against is one of my all time favourites. Even so, Melberg and Laursen were as good replacements for McGrath as we could have hoped for at that time. Mings is different, not as good as either but not far behind but he offers more to the whole team with organisation, improved passing, speed and is unflappable. I’ve forgiven him for his Brugge error just about.

I think that very special goal colors the view of how good Cahill was for us, it was after he left and played regularly he excelled. MON is still a numpty for selling him though.

Mings is beyond Laursen & Mellberg in that original list for me.

Mings gets bonus points for:

(A) Joining us at (close to) our lowest point in the last 50 years and playing a key part in promotion.

(B) Being good enough to transition to the top flight and become an England international - and then not immediately employing Paul Stretford or Kia Doublechin to get him the move his ego tells him he needs

(C) Actually sounding articulate and having something to say as captain - a rarity in football

Three excellent points.

Absolutely a legend for me, for all the reasons stated above. I think him, McGinn, Martinez and Watkins will be in the pantheon from this era.

Have to say, might be controversial or whatever but - Mings is better than Mellberg.

I know this is the Mings thread but where does Konsa fit into this conversation? Played more matches for us than Ty. Felt a bit harsh leaving him out of my suggested legends earlier but I think the leadership aspect puts him just below the ones I said.

Also, compared to Mings, his worst is better but his best is worse.

We've had some excellent Centre Backs over the years.

Evans
McGrath
Ehiogu
Southgate
Laursen
Mellberg
Terry

Would we hold Mings in similar regard?
Comparing players from different times, playing in Villa teams of varying fortunes, becomes an individual emotional choice rather than a rational decision.
That's why, for me, McGrath, Mellberg and Chris Nicholl are up there as legends. Mings, too, deserves the accolade for his affection for Villa as well as his personal progress from perceived journeyman (by many not in the Villa family) to England international.
