Mings is not thick at all. He is a very bright and erudite man. BUT, he also hasn't played football for us for 14 months. He was shouting up the pitch for to organise people, saw the ball roll in front of him and thought Emi had dropped it and put it back for a goal kick. He is not a ball player like Torres so didn't expect it to have been played to him. Why he didn't just nudge it back with his foot though I have no idea. Saliba did exactly the same last season and got away with it. And that was more blatant as he watched Raya kick it to him.

I'm not aware that there's been a material change to the rules of football while Mings was out. If you don't touch it with our hand, it can't be given as handball. It really is as simple as that.

Yes that was it - I knew someone did it before!  He has no-one to blame, but at the same time it kind of summed up how we've been - just dont seem at our best. To be fair maybe its a way of "doing" a goal kick off that hes just not used to like Pau is. 

To be honest - watching it I didnt think twice about it til they called it.  Ive forgiven him already for it.  I was less worried about the result and more about the performance - just like spurs and palace.

A silly mistake tonight and, as has been said, why bend down to pick it up when he could have tapped it back with his foot?

We didn't really miss him or Emi last season and much as I hope they will both come good, it's hard after a long time out and our level has gone up...though it was certainly not evident tonight!

Its just really irritating  that again we gift another team a win with amateur and idiotic errors that are totally avoidable. There is just no reason for such a error tonight

I'm guessing he didn't kick it back as that could be seen as him taking the goal kick to pass to Emi, and they had a player starting to close down?  Fuck knows, he'll be thinking about that forever.

Gutted for him, because he'll be devastated.

It’s just one of those inexplicable mistakes. A definite penalty and hopefully a slap in the face for all our defence to pull themselves together and start defending properly.

Yes, that is exactly what I said. Didn't you know about the rule change?

What I stated was the last time Mings played Emi wasn't giving Mings the ball two yards outside the goal kick box to get play started. I also stated he wasn't looking at Martinez when it was passed and so he also didn't see that and I think he thought he had dropped it. Still doesn't excuse the picking it up by his hands though.

For everyone asking for Mings to be staring - that's why he shouldn't be.  Too many brainless moves in his locker from the past and yet another one - perhaps the cherry on the cake - tonight.

What about if they’re asking for him to be starting because of that run of three goals conceded in ten games on the run-in to Conference League qualification? If he’d punched each one of those three goals into our net himself, it would still be worth it, right?

Then in the last 5 games he went to pot, letting in a disastrous one goal a game in two defeats at Man Utd and Wolves, two home wins v Brighton and Spurs, and a draw at Anfield.. Boo!

I’m sure you can point out his many errors in those games, and explain why those mistakes outweigh that record of 8 goals conceded in fifteen games that led to European qualification.

I mean, you can’t keep letting in half a goal a game. It means you have to score one to win!

If it seems a long time ago, those are his last 15 full league games. And who can forget how much we improved when he went off at Newcastle?

It’s a ridiculous mistake, but not one I’m overly worried about. He’ll never do it again and we move on. Like I said earlier, the far more concerning thing is the continuing down trend in performance from the team. At the moment we don’t look like a coherent, dynamic, team at all.
