I am with Risso.

In British sports parlance it has always been that way.

It has, and I use 'they' when referring to a football club, but, technically, Percy is surely correct?

Aston Villa is an institution. Aston Villa are an institution is horrible English.

Yes he is right technically, but it's not the usual usage (as you said).

Same, for me. I don't get too worked up over technicalities, because language is rich and varied, but if I were to say "I love Aston Villa", I'm referring to the proper noun i.e. the name.

When talking about human emotion, in this case being delighted, 'Aston Villa' is a collective noun, because within the context there is no singular 'Aston Villa' that could feel delighted.

It exists as both.

As a different example, you'd probably interpret me saying "I love dogs" differently to me saying "I love dog". It's complicated here because 'Aston Villas' doesn't exist as a plural.

Edit: Also, I is delighted Tyrone are committed to us for a while longer. I love hims.

I agree with you and Risso e.g. "How are Villa doing?" would be answered with "they're winning 1-0" not "it is winning 1-0" etc.
The team is doing well, whereas the team are doing well sounds wrong.

I love you Aftab, but 'the team are doing well' is absolutely correct.

😊 Rory. I would like it if the team are, I mean is, doing extraordinary well.

I think this topic needs a thread of its own and we need input from BE.

To clarify - Villa success = ‘We won.’
                Villa failure = ‘They lost.’

Interview on tv Emery has said it wasn't  a big injury and hopes Mings to get through 90 minutes and wanted him to start the game. I wonder if this is one of Emery tricks as surely big T is fit to play

Obviously I am no authority on usage but you might as well delete your post. ;-)

It will be difficult now to move Tyrone on once we buy a half decent CB. He’ll be another one seeing the end of his contract on a fat wage.

He is what he is. The contract was a mistake.

Either way it adds to his sell on value

Either way it adds to his sell on value

And when/if he is sold, then sell on value will become relevant...

Expecting better from a player who has shown time and time again how likely he is to make a mistake is madness.
