But they're not.

They are.

Of course it's not correct. Over here, we treat a team as a group of individuals, in exactly the same way we do with other groups of people like a (music) band. I don't think I've ever seen you say "The Jam is my favourite band", for example.

We’ll just have to agree to disagree then I suppose. The team didn’t announce the contract. The Aston Villa Football Club did.

The Style Council is my favourite group by the way.

I am with Risso.

In British sports parlance it has always been that way.

He'll probably get the captaincy back.

Emery has already said he's leaving it as it is this season.

Never said when.

Not always.

"Finance is important, but we should never forget that we are not talking about a mere business. This is the Aston Villa football club, and it deserves nothing short of the best."

Fred Rinder.

It. Not ‘they’. It’s a single entity. It does things it is delighted to announce.

It has, and I use 'they' when referring to a football club, but, technically, Percy is surely correct?

Aston Villa is an institution. Aston Villa are an institution is horrible English.

She'd better not be wearing trousers when she does.

Yes he is right technically, but it's not the usual usage (as you said).

I agree with you and Risso e.g. "How are Villa doing?" would be answered with "they're winning 1-0" not "it is winning 1-0" etc.
