If it is three and a half years as Gregg Evans says, that seems like a long old extension. He'll be 33 by then. Surely Emery's style is going to be different to a "blood and thunder" typical physical British centre half? For all his qualities Mings isn't much of a ball player.

I guess at least when it's time to sell we may get a fee for him.

There is that, good point.

If we want to improve on that, then at the very least we need some better central defenders to challenge him for the position.
I'm sure that is undoubtedly what will happen - Emery will see whether Mings rises to the challenge or whether he will need to be sold to a club being promoted from the C'ship.
I don't see this being a negative in any way, and I like seeing a player commit to the club longterm, even if we decide not to keep him down the track.

He is usually pretty agricultural in his clearances, but he does have it in him - the ball to Ings against Wolves for example.

If we were to sell Mings he'd find a far better club than Burnley, Sheff Utd or Boro.

Protecting an asset
Club probably don’t want to just let him go for nothing at the end of his contract

I agree with Risso he’s not a ball playing center half and lacks composure under pressure so not sure if he will be Emery’s long-term selection
The most frustrating thing about our play at the moment is to see him and Konsa slow the game right down and have no clue what to do with the ball under pressure

Having said that he’s our best centre half out of Konsa, Chambers and Hause but that’s a very low bar
Hopefully Diego will remedy that we don’t know yet

The stats are pretty meaningless without context though. Generally when he's not played, the back ups have either been Hause or Chambers. Hause is a big immobile carthorse, and Chambers is just rubbish. What the stat really tells you is that we haven't invested sufficiently since we've been back in the Premier League to make sure we've got adequate back ups. Good for him on getting his new contract, but he's been the mainstay of a team that's never finished higher than 11th. If we want to improve on that, then at the very least we need some better central defenders to challenge him for the position.
I'd rephrase that as he's been one of the best players in a team that's never finished higher than 11th.  There's plenty in the squad around him that have needed improving on before him though.  Infact other than Grealish and Watkins, we probably haven't had a more consistent and influential player in the team since promotion (I'm obviously not including Martnez and Kamara here).

I absolutely get that he's not Van Dyke, I'm just amazed there's always so much dialouge round him when he's one of our most influential players.

I do agree that we need all round improvement and better competition though.

As for being ball playing or not, he's not that bad.  We play virtually all our out balls through him when playing from the back.  He makes more mistakes because he shoulders all the responsibility.  Mostly he's pretty decent playing out, but yes sometimes he does hit the stands or get caught out.

I think all of our players are pretty much of a muchness ie all decent enough if you want to finish 11th or lower. Watkins is decent enough, but with a wonky first touch and misses chances. Mings is solid enough, but makes mistakes. Luiz can be really good, but lacks consistency. Buendia has a lovely touch and magic feet, but gives the ball away too much, and so on. It was tempting to blame everything on the previous manager, but now we've got a new super European coach with lots of success on his CV, and the players are still pretty much as inconsistent as they've always been.

Hope Emery sends him and Bailey on passing drills with each other where they can only use their right feet.

That aside, this is good news. His flaws are partially (mainly?) highlighted because he takes on more responsibility in the team than anyone else.

I think it's good news he's signed a new contract, but I will be surprised if he sees out the entirety of this new contract with us.  He's obviously an important first-team player right now, but that might look be very different in 12-18 months time, and the club have now ensured we get a fee for him if he leaves next summer (2024) - when his old contract meant he could have signed a Bosman deal somewhere this time next year.  As long as we've not given him silly money, it makes perfect sense to me.

And I think any fee we might get for him from next year onwards would also be good for FFP, given his original contract length would have been exceeded?

Now he was a sweeper.

I think this can only be a good thing.  He’s are best Center Half - and has been one of our best players this season.

Maybe in 2 years time he won’t be the first name on the team sheet - but I’m sure he is aware of it and I think having him at the club is only a good thing

I love him

One comment stands out:

"It didn’t relieve me of a burden, it didn’t free me up to play any better, it didn’t take any pressure off me"

He'll probably get the captaincy back.
