For all his words on twitter about backing McGinn etc.. it was all a load of rubbish and if his attitude is not right then he should not play, it seems that Mings thinks he cannot be dropped

In less than three months, Tyrone Mings has lost his place in the England squad, been relieved of the Aston Villa captaincy and now been dropped from the team’s starting XI.

They were decisions that might individually have been understandable but, taken together, would test the confidence of even the most resilient character. It was curious, and questionable, then to hear Steven Gerrard put the onus so firmly back on Mings after a limp opening day defeat in which his team hardly oozed character and leadership (scroll down for match report).

“I think the easy thing to do after defeat is to look at the people who weren’t on the pitch,” said Gerrard, upon being asked about his decision to leave out Mings and pair Ł26 million new signing Diego Carlos in central defence with Ezri Konsa.
Then came the passage that provoked considerable debate among Aston Villa fans after it was posted by the BBC West Midlands reporter Steve Hermon. “I'm confident and have full belief [that] when Tyrone is back at his best and looks me in the eye and shows me he’s ready to play, he’ll get opportunities,” said Gerrard.

“He's missed some training time with an injury and there's a niggle in the background. That's the challenge I set him when I made the decision over the captaincy. We said to Tyrone, ‘You get back to your consistent best and you'll get back in the team’. We haven't lost the game because Tyrone Mings wasn't playing.”

There were indeed other problems on Saturday – not least the meek attacking contributions of Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho – but Villa would surely have stood up to Bournemouth’s considerable physical presence rather better with Mings in the team.
He certainly made mistakes in the final months of last season but the wider statistics are also firmly in his favour. In only 12 league matches when Mings has not been in the starting team since he signed in February 2019, Villa have lost eight times and won just twice.

It all points to a wider on-field influence that extends far beyond whatever narrow performance statistics might have been pored over.
Beyond that and Gerrard’s remarks - especially the suggestion to ‘look me in the eye and show he is ready’ - felt surprisingly pointed. Gerrard has previously already said that Mings was “ a little raw” over losing the captaincy to John McGinn and, while we cannot judge what the manager sees in training, he has certainly appeared to take recent decisions like a model professional. Mings sent his England team-mates a good luck message after losing his squad place in May and was similarly gracious after McGinn was confirmed captain last month. “I’ve no issues with the manager’s decision - it will be an honour to play under his [McGinn’s] captaincy,” he wrote.

By all accounts, Mings threw himself into the captaincy role last season and took it upon himself to represent the club at many community events. Part of the rationale for the change, therefore, was to allow him more time to focus on his football.

How the situation now unfolds will be fascinating. Football moves quickly and, while Gerrard’s words seem designed to get a reaction, the immediate aftermath of a disappointing defeat is not always the ideal moment to express exactly what you mean

It always amazes me that people expect humans not to be humans. Tyrone means his words on Twitter but it doesn't mean that his emotions won't be affected by recent events. He unfairly lost his place in the England squad just before the summer and then came back to be stripped of the Villa captaincy very publicly.

As others have said, raw numbers back up his importance to the team. Some fans have long called for him to be left out but we never look comfortable when he is. Neither Carlos nor Konsa are particularly tall either, and we are a small team in general so we are always likely to suffer aerially when he isn't in the team. I think we need him.

Well he said so after Smith had dropped him. Said he didn’t agree with it and felt like he’d been made a scapegoat.

I’d hope all of our players would have a mentality that they think they are good enough and pissed off about it. It’s now up to those who have replaced him and himself if he gets another chance to prove themselves.

I'm a big Mings fan, I think his plus points far outweigh the errors people are so keen to highlight.  And yes we definitely missed his first up headers when defending corners and overall fight he would have brought against Bournemouths rudimentary tactics and big front two.

But Gerrard is perfectly within his rights to change captain and drop him if he feels he needs to.  There's a lot of revisionism going on about Mings, who has been particulalry unpopular both on here and elsewhere for many posters.

We defended set peices poorly, that's either down to McPhee or individual errors.  But there's a lot more to Saturdays poor perfromance than the dropping of Mings.

It is hard to escape the feeling that for whatever reason, Mings does get scapegoated both for us and for England.  As pointed out in various articles, our record when he doesn't play is markedly worse, and England's record when he plays is incredible - something like 2 goals conceded in 16 games.

For someone who was a relatively late starter due to injuries etc., Mings is an outstanding defender.  Yes he makes mistakes, but so do all defenders  - his just seem to get highlighted more.  If we hadn't signed him when we did then we wouldn't have got promoted and be where we are now, and he deserves a lot more respect than he gets at times.  This is why it makes it all the more worrying that our manager is effectively throwing him under the bus.  Mings has already done enough to earn our respect and deserve patience - Gerrard hasn't and he seems intent on taking apart a lot of the good things that we have built over the last four years for no good reason that I can see.

Mings is a cracking defender. Lapses are part of the game, if we had a defender who made no mistakes he'd be gone within 12 months.  Get him back in the team, get him back feeling valued. Why we felt the need to create a drama out of nothing I have no idea. Gerrard is pissing me off. Beetroot headed wanker.

Gerrard alluded to the noise and narrative around Mings recently. While adding to the noise and narrative around Mings of course.

There is a perception amongst other fans that he is clumsy and cumbersome, probably fuelled in part by the disproportionate number of Villa fans who seem to share that view of social media. Even that Darren Farley bloke who does the football impressions videos has a pop at Tyrone every time he does an impression of Gerrard.

It is tricky to know where it has come from. Aside from the truly elite centre halves at Man City and Liverpool, there aren't many better or less error prone in the league.

The Alan Smith turn was a running joke with me and my mate for years, just to underline how ridiculously brilliant McGrath was for us.

It did happen though, and he was a good player was Smith, better than he's given credit for. Probably one for a new category "Players that didn't play or come close to playing for us, that probably should have"

Man City and Liverpool centre halves do very little defending and it's usually against an attack stretching to get to a rare forward ball. Stick them in our defence and watch the "errors" mount up.
