Reflects more that England do not have one quality centre half so Southgate is just chucking darts at the board hoping a couple stick.  Maguire should have been nowhere near any squad this season.

He was one of England's best players as they reached the final of an international competition ten months ago. Why would Southgate drop him?

Tomori should get in. Maguire over pretty much anyone, never mind Mings, is the issue. Shows that the manager doesn't pick based on form.

Similar with that Man City player.

Seems the general anti Mings narrative has got the result it wants.

Maguire? He has been awful for his club all season so he is picked on history not form which is Southgates way - arguably the best English centre back this season has been Dier.  Guehi & Tomori are next cabs off the rank so hope he gives them a go

Put a different shirt on Mings and he'd be in so discussing the various merits of players is largely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. It's why I've finally given up with the national side, a succession of managers have not put the best interests of the team first, preferring to demonstrate favouritism, intransigence and downright arrogance. Add to that the contradictory statements and policies adopted by the current incumbent culminating in his sidelining of an exceptional talent last summer that could have made all the difference.

It's also the way of every single international manager in history.

I’m not sure if I just notice the anti Mings posts on this thread ( and the match thread ) more than the positive ones. If iI indeed haven't done that,  we can’t be surprised / upset, as I think the consensus here is he’s not good enough for Villa , yet alone England.

Harry has had a tough time but he's a decent defender and more of a leader than most players. Ty unlucky to be in. The AC Milan chap has helped deliver their first scudetto in years sp he probably deserves a call-up.

I don’t think I’m the only one who is concerned that all the anti Mings feeling from some Villa fans may not always be based on his football ability.

If Maguire is in because he’s never let England down then why not Mings? Wasn’t he involved in the Euro’s for the first few games and did he put a foot wrong? Both haven’t had the best of seasons but I’d say Mings has been better than Maguire.
Unless he’s been left out so others can be looked at I’d say Southgate’s moving the goalposts here.

When Southgate came in, I'm sure he gave more chances to players from clubs outside the top 6. As time has gone on, he's reverted to type.

The issue is that he has done quite well in the last couple of tournaments, he'll argue his methods work.

Mings gets knocked for his mistakes on here, and by everyone else, so I'm not surprised.
