i don’t mind either of our central defenders although I’ve always thought Engels is the better footballer
But he’s injured so it’s a mute point

but here’s the problem as I see it concerning centre half’s

the world has changed there’s no longer a list of top class centre half’s around the league or even in Europe
Adams, Terry, McGrath, Laursen, Ferdinand, Bruce Pallister,  Vidic, Gallas, Toure, Keown, Ledley King, Carragher, Desailly, Campbell,

I know I’m going back over the years there but I’m only scratching the surface there’s loads more but there’s nobody apart from Van Dijk that’s  anywhere near there standard nowadays

even in Europe where is the Beresi’s Maldini’s and the Carvalho’s even Ramos is an old man now

to prove my point if you had 200million to spend and wages no problem what central defensive partnership would you go out and buy
if you can’t have Van Dijk your struggling

so Mings and Konsa mistakes and all are as good as we can hope for in the present climate
(But I still think Engels is the best of the lot )

I rate Mings to become a VP legend one day, not quite God status, but on par with Mellberg... but since he’s been picked for England, he strolls around the pitch like he’s Paolo Maldini!!!
JT needs to quickly bring him down to Earth with a boot up the derrière sharpish, he was poor today, to casual & on to many occasions out of position...
Next game is over a week away, let’s hope DS works on the mistakes from today’s game & puts them right against WHU.

His positional awareness for their first goal was embarrassing. Proper schoolboy stuff.

There’s a back 4 though they were all in front of him not just Mings

Could it be with Mings that he has cemented a squad place with England and at the Villa no one is pushing for his place so maybe subconsciously he has become a little cock sure of himself? If he plays poorly then he’s unlikely to get dropped because we’ve no one else?
Konsa, has no one pushing for his place either but he’s still young and will want to get international caps so has that drive. Just a thought.

The other three weren't marking the guy who scored.

He follows Wellbeck to the touch line for a throw in in their half, ball thrown over Wellbecks head and As play develops Wellbeck runs forward and Mings stays where he is taking himself completely out of the game, Brighton did not need to do anything clever to set up the chance. Our centre half went walk about, forgot about his man and they scored. It’s not the first time either.
Pathetic from a professional footballer, Sunday league stuff.

Totally agree, shoddy, lack of concentration and awareness

Agreed on Mings but also thought Konsa should have dropped off. Our defensive line was five yards inside their half for defending their goal. Luiz was dreadful too for both goals.

The first goal was awful. Reminded me of that Djemba Ba goal against Manchester United that everyone took the piss out of. Don’t think it can be pinned on just Mings though. He was poor, but I think you would expect three of four others to do better as well.

I just want to see him defend. Not steaming forward, not thinking he’s Maldini with all the time in the world to stroke it round and then to get dispossessed. Just be a solid centre back. Concentrate, cut out the mistakes.
He’s a liability.

Cash should have been much deeper than he was; he would then have been able to get round to deal with Welbeck. Also, Luiz was guilty of ball-watching, and Mings got sucked in too far.

Pretty much the same for the second BHA goal: Cash and Luiz both switched off.

It was not just Mings, the whole back line was so far forward, it was ridiculous.

There is allways a player that calls the line ( usually centre half),  this is Mings.
You can argue other players should cover but the first mistake is Mings wandering over there.
