I have this feeling that we will be playing Small Heath or Sandwell Town in the play offs or maybe even both .Both keep winning

West Brom will get second.

Having Norwich or Boro in the play offs would be brilliant for us I think.

I thought we were pretty decent 2nd half and even Hourihane looked more likely as both he and McGinn got in advanced positions.

Not brilliant or close to our best, but our wingers and generally attacking play makes us too strong for most.

Seemed to me like we created more in the first half? McGinn and Abraham also put on wide. Second half was very much retreat after Hourihane goal and hang on for the 1-0.

I thought Swansea would cause us more problems with two wingers and two centre forwards, when they made their substitutions, but they didn't really, until El Ghazi had a brain fart.

I thought either side of half time a goal was coming

Mcginn was possibly pushed in the box before we scored - would have been a sitter.

Villa guys, Villa.  Bugger off to 'other football' if Leeds are all you wish to discuss!!

Today, we still seem to take the wrong option at times and give the ball away too cheaply.  Nyland had a solid game and it feels good to get a clean sheet.  Hutton and Elmo had to cope with a lot of diagonal balls and coped ok.  Whelan is still absolute cack.  Hourihane scored but didn't seem to do too much more than that.  El Ghazi, wtf were you doing?  Bolasie was unpredictable.  Nice goal and I thought we were just about the better side overall.  Chester was better today.  Deserved win.  Had we have drawn both festive games, we may have been satisfied, therefore, I reckon we might be a point better off as it stands.  Good win, average performance, one day closer to the transfer window opening.  McGinn was great but now has 9 bookings for the season.

I stopped reading after you told me to bugger off.
We are all Villa too so please try to be more polite to your fellow Villains.

There is a football thread for other teams as this is the Villa post match thread.  Merry Christmas, sorry if I offended anyone.
Merry Christmas

You won't be saying that when we are beating Norwich 1-0 in the play off final and the board goes up to show eight minutes of injury time. ;)

Already got my 50 quid insurance bet on Norwich to qualify after 90 minutes ready. ;)

Apparently James Bree was very good today. He deserves a good run now. I'll be annoyed if he gets dropped on Saturday. Give  him a chance ffs!!

Welcome three points. Wouldn’t have said another midfielder was a priority but changed my view based on today.

Just back, relieved at the win. Grateful to Nyland who recouped a couple of the points he's cost us this season.

The first half wasn't great at all; like Leeds they were playing lots of diagonal balls to the flanks, if not always as successsfully - surely we must cotton more quickly  on to teams doing that against us?

Also we were forced to pass back to Nyland so many times and he had no option but to kick long.

I thought Hutton was positionally poor although he set up the goal, and  Bolasie rarely gave him any help by tracking back.

Hourihane is a perplexing conundrum. He was fairly anonymous in the first half, better in the second, and scored the winner and is always a threat from a free kick or a shot from 25 yards. I just don't see the point in trying to play him in a more defensive role.

Great result! Well done Villa boys! It was important to stay in touch with top 6, ahead of January transfer window, when hopefully (with incomings) we can push on. Pleased with clean sheet and Nyland's performance. Great pen save. He made a good attempt vs stoke also. Pleased also for Bree.
Conor showed his worth again. Goals and assists that we're lucky enough to have, but I'm sure is the envy of other championship clubs. Keep up the good work Deano! VTID!
