He's not shit.
But he would be if he played for Hull? ;)

We paid £7m for a keeper who is no better than Nyland. We've got five keepers at the club and they're all shit.

The goalkeeping situation at the club this season just sums up the kind of muddled thinking that has plagued the club for years now.  'Buy a player for a position and put them on good money, oh he's crap, let's buy another one and put him on good money, oh he's crap as well, let's just keep buying players until we find a decent one'.

First viewing of Kalinic yesterday and was far from convinced.  I still can't quite understand why Steer was not given a chance at the start of the season, as he has looked the best of the bunch in the two games he has played.

Kalinic will be fine long term for us. Will help once we actually have something of a defence in front of him

Not having a go at you or anyone else on here, but I'm not sure how having a decent defence in front of them stops keepers from making the kind of mistakes he did yesterday.  He didn't really have a lot to do yesterday in terms of making saves (but did make a very good one at the end), so it wasn't like he was under a lot of pressure.  I'm certainly no goalkeeping expert, but he is a big guy and from the goals he has conceded so far, he does look a bit slow to get down.

As you say though, he needs to be judged in the long term, so we will see how he progresses.

A shot got under him. It happens. Of more concern was Bowen, 10 yards out and where you'd expect a player to score, utterly unmarked.

If you're letting the opposition have a free hand like that you're going to concede.

As long as it doesn't happen too often though Ads!!  Agree about the marking though, we were all over the place for both goals.

Sam Johnstone would look no different than Kalinic behind that defence.

We are all over the place at the back. That starts with Chester who needs a solid defender and organizer next to him. Chester is an ok number two, but between having lost a partner in AT he was developing a relationship with, playing on the left, trying to be captain, having his own form issues, injuries and having to contend with two of the worst full backs imaginable is it any wonder he’s regressed along with our defence overall.

He’s an upgrade on Nyland but has made some simple mistakes time will tell

Not at all. Nyland's distribution is far better and a real big miss at the moment, and his shot stopping is also at the very least on par

Absolutely no goalkeeper is going to come into this club, play infront of that defence and look assured straight away, Johnstone looked dodgy for the first few weeks and he played infront of a settled back four including John Terry and a team prime tactic was not to conceed.

My thoughts exactly, apart from you thinking Andrew Townsend played along side Chester in the past.

Haha. I would absolutely love us to have Townsend right now.

Agree to a point TV, but it can also work the other way where an unreliable keeper can unnerve defenders.  Doubts start to creep in and that indecision can be very costly.  To be honest, we've probably had the worst of both worlds this season where the keeper can't trust the defence and vice versa.

Exactly. We’re quick to criticise but we have a clusterfuck of a back five right now.
As others have said, it will take another close-season to get traction.

No doubt. But it’s harder to establish command when he looks in front of him and he’s got any combination of Chester, Elphick, Elmo, Hutton, Taylor, Bree. And then throw in give the ball away experts like Bjarnason, Whelan or Hourihane.
