Mark was a very good player for Charlton and Ireland prior to breaking his leg pre-Villa. GT2 unfortunately read too much into his solid performances for a Roy Keane less Ireland in the 2002 WC.

I always rated him at Charlton so thought he'd be an o.k signing.

Weren't we in for Matt Holland at the same time but he didn't want to leave Ipswich?

We were. Sir Graham wanted to recreate the Ireland midfield pairing, but unfortunately got by far the weaker of the two players and not the one who was any good.

Because Matt Holland was probably the only footballer at the time apart from David Beckham whose wife was earning more than him (she owned a stud farm from memory) so he didn't want to move from Suffolk.

Heard something on the radio the other day about Mark Hughes's daughter competing in the Commonwealth Games. Decided to Google it to check I hadn't dreamt it. Turns out Xenna Hughes is playing hockey for Wales in the Commonwealth Games.
