Snowflake generation....
).

Ah... the current default insult. What’s ‘snowflake’ about having a discussion about current affairs? Or did you just learn that phrase from the comments section in the Mail Online?
ah... the current default insult. I'm Guardian reader thanks.

Have you anything constructive to say?
It's just a flag.

Really..?

Yup. It's his company, his stadium.

If he wants to stick an ISIS flag on there, it's pretty much his call.

Well, since we're at war with ISIS and not with China i think there's a big difference there but agreed the it's his company and stadium and if he want to put his country's flag up fair enough. I would prefer a Villa flag myself though.

EDIT: Or better still a flag with a picture of Albert Adomah's grinning mug on.

Zero democracy, global state sponsored hacking, espionage, near summary executions, detention without trial, repression of ethnic groups and religious freedom, human rights violations. Need I go on? Considering the outcry when John Terry signed, I’m surprised the moral majority on HandV aren’t extremely concerned.

If that's your issue, surely the time to get upset is when the Chinese guy buys the club, not afterwards when he sticks his country's flag on the roof?

Well not really. I can accept that the funding to buy Villa came via China through the global economy. Do any of us really know where our money comes from? Your bank or your investments? Your iPad or your clothing? I think that flying the flag of a murderous repressive regime however over Villa Park is beyond the pale.

I get where you are coming from but maybe this will help.

Dr.X is a businessman he has nothing to do with his government's actions. He is proud to be Chinese. Nothing wrong with that. Lots of Russians are patriots as well who have no love for Putin, the majority of USA citizens hate everything Trump and his voters stand for but love their country.

Sometimes you have to distinguish between the government and the country you know?

edit: Anyway not trying to belittle your concerns, just trying to hopefully help give you a way of looking at things so you dont ruin your enjoyment of Villa with the flag there. Hope it helps.
No they don't, otherwise he wouldn't have been elected 12 months ago!

You might want to check the popular vote count, BC54!
I stand corrected, SE. Embarrassed as I was actually in the US last Oct/Nov!

It's sad to be saying this, but since any nation's flag has the capacity to offend at least someone, perhaps it is for the best if none are flown.

(I was going to suggest just a "Villa" flag, but this being H&V it would provoke 136 pages on the correct Pantone shade of claret and blue, whether stripes are too-Albion, the ferocity/cuddliness of the lion and whether or not 'Prepared' should appear - and, if so, in which font.)

I’ve just noticed the national flag of China is flying over the HDE Stand. Anyone else uncomfortable with this?
May be you should look properly next time you are at VP as it's been there a long time and I don't think anybody should be "uncomfortable" with that. Our owner is from China and proudly displays his heritage and I welcome it. If you also care to look around the City you will fine most multi-national businesses display the flag of their origin and that's great.

That isn't the same though as our origin isn't in China.  Unless it is an international match then I don't really think there is any need for a national flag to be flying over a sports stadium anyway, but I just find it a little uncomfortable to see the club associated in such a way with a country with a questionable record on certain issues.  It would have been the same if a Lerner had flown the Stars and Stripes over Villa Park during his tenure here as well.

There are already Villa flags flying on the stand. I'm sure there was an American flag on there when Lerner was in charge. The British Empire has a fairly dubious record, particularly with regard to China. Nobody cares about the Union Jack on there, though. Only mentallists from backwards countries like North Korea, Northern Ireland and America care about flags.

So why’s it up there then? Is Tony a mentalist from a backward country?

I'd imagine he thinks that it'll help spread the name of Aston Villa in China while also promoting his business interests in the UK. Good luck to him on both fronts.

Not quite sure how having a Chinese flag on one of our stands that won't even be seen on TV is going to help promote the club in China.  As I said earlier, it's a minor issue though really and I'm far more concerned with what is happening on the pitch.

I know it was initially suggested in jest, but can I endorse the idea of banning Level 42?

As I mentioned earlier, many Villa fans would gleefully bedeck the bars/streets/stadiums of other countries with the England/Union flag were we to have a game abroad. And would be mightily miffed if told it was unacceptable. I don't see how Tony's flag is any different.*

*Please don't come back with China's human rights record. The British have plenty of previous in this department.

Or we could stop being so damn precious and get on with life. If you banned everything that had the capacity to offend someone we'd all be hermits.

Bringing another thread and this together, all children's fairy tales would be banned immediately for a start.

I suspect that over the next few years we will be glad that our (Union) flag will be 'flown' on/over as many products and services as possible in China as we enter the fantasy, milk and honey land being determined by the reckless incompetents 'negotiating' post-Brexit Britain - as we join (along with its only member on the planet, so far: mighty Mauritania) WTO-rules Narnia.

But you make the point succinctly - Britain's human rights abuse is indeed previous whereas China's is current.
