Which is precisely what I'm saying. The Football League got left behind when the PL emerged. They need to be more forward thinking to stay in touch with new, younger fans or those fans end up supporting the obvious clubs in the PL.

They got left behind because of the PL coming into being (I am maybe reading too much into the choice of the word but 'emerged' suggests a natural evolution into a state of being, whereas what actually happened was that 20 clubs decided to take way more of the money than they were used to getting).

If the second tier in this country is the fifth biggest league in the world (or whatever that figure is), then they're clearly doing something right.

It's also worth remembering that for every Villa v Leeds or Sunderland v Sheffield Wednesday, there are an awful lot of Burton v Small Heaths that nobody outside a few thousand people gives a fuck about.

Don't read too much into the word emerged. It's more that whatever the plan was it was executed and clubs broke away from the Football League.

And I'm not saying it's all bad. But being in it shows how much more could be done. Like I said if in 2017 I as a fan of the game and of a team in the league finds it difficult to see them on a regular basis, despite the wealth of technology/social media/internet access etc available then there's much room for improvement.

I assume that with whatever is the Canadian equivalent of a Kodi Box, you can get all our games on Sky, and our occasional cup games on other channels.

You can't expect to get games that aren't being televised... anywhere.

Except the Villa film and broadcast every single match inside Villa Park.  It can't be beyond the wit of man to work out a way to stick that steam on the internet for overseas fans to pay to watch. If Sky aren't showing it they shouldn't give a fuck and AVTV demonstrated the technical capability years ago.

I can see the problem right away. They pay a fortune for the rights - they get exclusivity. If they aren't showing it, they ain't gonna let anyone else show it.

And if the option existed to buy an overseas season ticket I'd be delighted, as would many others who live abroad. Or even domestically to provide better match day coverage to domestic fans. Not everyone can get to Villa Park and even fewer to away games.

Who says they've got exclusivity? And in any event, haven't they bought the UK broadcast rights?

Maybe this is the sort of thing TV was on about - the Premier League are a canny bunch and worked out how you segment the packages to make the best use of them. Maybe that's where the Football League are going wrong. Football didn't fundamentally change in 1992 - how it was marketed did.

That's where my point started Ad@m. Instead of having to put two sponsors on a kit to drive revenue which is predominantly seen by domestic audiences, and mainly those at the game, if they could expand their reach domestically and globally the revenues would be that much bigger benefitting the entire league structure. I have no doubt there are complications with regard to broadcasting distribution but there are so many more ways to market the game that there must be way beyond how they are doing it today. It all feels very amateur and clumsy at times, and yet in spite of that the league itself does well. My point all along has been it could do so much better.

2nd Div games are often played at the same time as PL games has something to do with it.
The fact is that Sky FA Pl are going to want to controll any potential competition and keeping other English football in its place suits that  agenda.

Presumably whoever broadcasts the Championship in Canada has other sporting events on during the rest of the day, and wouldn't be keen to have their viewing audience diluted by people going off to watch matches online. They'll have paid for exclusivity, partly so noone else can show the games in Canada, partly so nobody can show it during their other broadcasts.

Because it impacts the value of the fixtures they do pay for.

They definitely care about PL games not selected as the live option that weekend being watched via alternative methods, so I can't see them going easier on the Championship.

Sorta connected, but I'm sure I read recently that subscriptions are down this year. Meaning they are looking at ways to repackage Sky Sports 1, 2 and 3 et.c. Maybe Kodi is starting to bite and the next TV deal won't be so ludicrous.  A slight change in income could see some of those sides with ropey attendances really hit the skids.
