From the commentary it sounds like the pitch at Edgbaston is going to play a big part, lots of inconsistent bounce.

170/4 Trott 77* Ambrose 39*

Middlesex finished on 334 so the lead is 170.  Umeed was done by one which just didn't bounce and there's been a few other nasty ones so there's definitely something for the bowlers.  It's getting towards the point where the lead is enough to interesting.

I'd tell them to try and whack a quick seventy after tea and the declare. The weather doesn't look fantastic tomorrow and there is no point in not risking defeat for a potential victory when you're in as shit a position in the table as we are.

I think declare overnight at least.  £ days running the morning session has been the best for the bowlers, we shouldn't waste that trying to ensure the draw.

Weather wise it looks like things are going to be decent until the late afternoon so it's only really a case of losing 15-20 overs, so there's still lots of time to play.

211/7 - looking a bit like there's not going to be any choice about when the chase starts.

Two wickets in the first 5 overs for the Bears including that Nazi fella who scored loads in the first innings

Middlesex 1-2

Middlesex 36-2 at stumps so 8 wickets needed with 196 to play with on the final day.

They are in the driving seat even though O would have taken their closing score when their innings opened.

God knows why Trott brought Patel and Rankin on for the closing overs. Barker and Clarke were getting some decent swing.

I would say that it is illuminating to see at which stage both sides have introduced spin. In passing, Trott bowled the same number of overs as our young seamer George P. in the first innings: 7. Expect Rankin to finish the game with an economy rate close to 6.

I think he was just trying to mix it up to buy a cheap wicket but it just didn't pay off.

You are right, of course. It's just that Middlesex, in our position, would have continued with their main seamers, and that is without Finn and Roland-Jones.

By the way, who was sitting a few feet away from me today in the Sky Line East but one Trevor Francis.

He is a member and used to play cricket until banned by Blues management after sustaining an injury in close season. A genuinely good chap going through some hard personal issues, having lost his wife and father recently.

Will be resuming his TV career with BT after the hiatus.
