My son has disowned me and claims that Whelan is now his dad and that he missed the pen on purpose. My lad has a very vivid imagination and is now very happy.

The Express & Star understands Bruce was summoned to a meeting with chief executive Christian Purslow on Wednesday morning, where he was given the news.

An official announcement is expected later on Wednesday evening.

At this stage, it is unclear which of Bruce’s backroom staff, if any, will remain at the club.
