Its only a failure if we dont go up.

This. None of it will matter if we win the play offs. The time to question is when we don’t.

The failure came in the first games of the season and our dreadful lack of firepower. The remainder of the season matched what could be expected.

Its not a live question for me TODAY.  If we fail to win the play offs and the mood and debrief are negative then there may be a question, but Steve Bruce for all his limitaions has stabilised Aston Villa.

Be careful for what we wish !

I have come round to this view. If we don't go up-he deserves one more season, or at least to start a new season. We were truly embarrassing at times for the previous 5 years and the root and branch changes have mostly happened. It would be as easy to slip back as progress with another change of manager. He seems to be a decent bloke and appears to be popular with nearly everyone at the club. What impresses me is this seems to extend to the 'tea lady' level. Just as important, he has made some good signings-Terry was not my choice at all. True some total flops but he does have an idea of who can make a difference. Hopefully he can add nurturing youngsters to that as we have slipped back there.
All-in-all, I'm prepared to give him the summer and up to Christmas to continue the improvement.

It's win or bust basically. Don't go up and we're basically starting from scratch. No guarantee the loan players won't get snapped up on permanent deals by other clubs. Hutton and Terry probably gone because of the money situation.  I make that 6/7 players down by the end of May with probably not the money to replace them, so then you're looking at selling players to raise funds and somewhat unfairly, clubs only want our decent players..........Add to that the likes of Jedinak and whelan looking their age

None of that is Bruce's fault particularly, but the whole "get promoted asap and then worry about building a team" philosophy that brought him here is. If we are still in the Championship next season with a major rebuilding job on our hands and little money to do it with, then Bruce wouldn't be my choice, and you'd have to say the job he was brought in for no longer exists.

It'll be Bruce's fault if we don't go up, full stop.

Well yeah, he obviously thought instant promotion was on when he took the job, and if he doesn't manage it 12 months late, then the failure to achieve it will lie at his feet. My feeling is given the state of the team that came down, the whole philosophy that got Bruce (and probably RDM) employed in the first place was wrong. It was a totally rotten side and a look at the personnel backs that up. Not even 2 seasons on from that relegated side and apart from Hutton and Grealish who hardly played, there is nothing left of that team. If we'd took a more balanced approach to rebuilding, played the kids more, signed permanent players instead of loans then would we be in a better position now squad wise? IF we go up you'd have to say the club were right. If not, then i'd say it was a gamble that failed and we'll be paying it off for a long time to come

I think the real stability came with the new owner rather than Bruce and he may well be the most popular man at the ground but we employ him as a manager of the football team not because he’s a nice bloke.

Poor Steve. Now his Mum has passed away, what a truly awful time he's going through over the past few months.

I'd let his staff take over. Steve needs to be away from football for a while.

If anything the distraction of the play off's may help him through it initially but yes, awful news.

Thoughts with Steve and the Bruce family. Entirely understandable if he leaves Sunday's game to Calderwood.

I would think he most probably will. Calderwood did the pre-match press conference.

really ? I would have though the 'distraction of the play off's' is the last thing on his mind.
