On 16th November 1963 we beat Manchester United 4 - 0 at VP, which I believe is our biggest margin of victory over United since the end of World War 2.

The late great Tony Hateley scored twice, with Harry Burrows and Alan Deakin also on target. The match is probably best remembered for the sending off of Denis Law, for kicking Deakin. whilst he was on the ground.

The crowd was 36k, but it is interesting to note the crowd for the return fixture at Old Trafford was only 26k and United finished 2nd in the league that season. They didn't have their glory hunters in those days.

Without starting a new thread on the same topic, can any of us old enough to remember Villa 11 (eleven) Charlton Athletic 1 (one).  It was on 14/11/1959.  I was at that too.  Eleven goals for Villa for my eleventh birthday.  I traveled to that game on my own.  Two buses from Sheldon, you would let an eleven-year-old travel that distance today at your peril.

I'm old enough to remember the 11-1, better than any game I saw over the last two seasons. Without resorting to Wiki I think Gerry Hitchens got 5 and the Charlton keeper Willy Duff (?) went off injured after  we scored 8.

Wasn't it about this time we beat Leicester 8-3 who had Gordon Banks in goal?

When Duff got injured, Andy Townsend's father Don Townsend replaced him.

The Leicester win was a couple of seasons later, when we were back in the top flight.

They averaged 44K that season which was the 3rd best in the country. We averaged 22K.

I saw both the 8-3 against Leicester and the 5-1 against Forest 2 days later (Easter weekend 1962). But coming back to the 4-0 against Man U, the Deakin goal was a real screamer, one of my favourite Villa goals of all time.

Harry Burrows had a shot like a cannonball.He was sadly missed when he left for Stoke.

Round necks denoted first team players and V necks denoted those from the reserves .In the 1966 team photo everyone wore V necks.

Don Townsend was replaced by their centre forward for the last two goals! Seems incredible that Stan Lynn was not on the score sheet that afternoon!
