I've never spent so long queuing for trains in my life, absolute fucking shambles. Take my hat off to any Brighton fans daft enough to do that every week.

It's obviously a regular issue there.  There was a specific thread about trains on their North Stand Forum last night.

I don't understand why football clubs feel the need to make such a big deal about it these days because I have no memory of it ever happening when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s. The cynic in me suggests just a box ticking exercise from clubs who just want to be seen to do the right thing. Whatever it is though it seems to be getting more over the top with every year that passes. Those fuckin buglers are the final straw.

I guess Football clubs would respond that matches are seen as public events nowadays and most public gatherings would've had their remembrance events.

It's a bit like when I was learning to drive and was talking to my instructor who was an Everton fan about end of season lap of honours from the team...was amazed when he said this sort of thing never happened in the 70s and 80s.

That's just due to home teams wanting to show their respect , I don't mind that.
But these minutes applause for Joe bloggs aunties dog who stopped for a piss once in Aston Park are getting tiresome.

Just had a look on their website and apparently the travel problems after the game were exacerbated by Southern Rail (who seem to pop up on the news quite a lot) making several late and unannounced cancellations just before the end of the game

Three or four trains on the bounce immediately after full-time in the Lewes direction were cancelled.  And two other nearly empty trains went straight through without stopping.  Suspect deliberate action by the rail staff. (who are presently in dispute with Southern Rail).
Spoiled what was otherwise a good night out.  Credit to Brighton and Villa fans who who were mostly patient and in good humour.  But it could have turned nasty.

It was an absolute shambles getting out. Southern have a reputation for being shite, but to cancel that many trains, not let the fast trains stop and – the thing that most boiled my piss – not communicate with the thousands of fans trying to get onto trains either side is gross negligence.

Eventually managed to get a train into Brighton and hop on the Gatwick Express back to London; getting back through the front door at 1am. Would it kill Southern to lay on a football special service on matchdays? Christ, it makes the service from Witton look half decent.

I was on the 11:10 from Brighton to London which had to be switched after 30 minutes wait as the original train had a technical problem. Or no driver. Not sure as there was no announcement. Got into London around 1:15 and home at 2:20.

A mate who is a Villa fan in Brighton told me that his daily southern rail train to Victoria hasn't arrived once on time in 12 months!

If this had been a Saturday 3pm kick off it would have been manageable but for a Friday night it was abysmal. Thanks to Sky and Southern.

Got back to the north west at half 3 after a brief stop off on the M25 and Birmingham.

The boy was up at half 5. Shattered today.

The rail service down here in the south is an absolute disgrace and has been for several months. Even when there's not a strike on, trains are regularly cancelled at short notice, always with the excuse of "non-availability of train crew". When I travel up to Villa Park I always have to allow an extra hour to get to Victoria because my train is likely to be cancelled without warning.

We were in the queue waiting for the Brighton train  as well. There was a couple in front of us who got separated from another two in their party and the stupid security wouldn't let them join them despite only just letting them through. I know they must have a hard job, but it did come across as a bit jobsworthy.

Having travelled to the stadium on the bus with relative ease, we thought that would be the best way back as well. This proved to be a mistake and we gave up after 45 minutes with only two buses appearing and filling up in that time so we went back to the train. Instead. It made me pine for Upton Park.
