come from the fact we aren't paying the nearly £10m we would have to in transfer fees. he can command a higher salary. Lets just hope he doesn't just rest on his laurels when/if he gets here.
Hourihane would be a a much more economical signing if the numbers reported are anyway accurate - he'd also offer us balance we haven't had since the snake left

if we were paying 10 million in transfer fees then that would be equally ludicrous in its own right

I never said it wasn't a mad amount but it wouldn't be surprising if that was quoted should he have had longer on his contract. Look at the quotes for Cairney at Fulham...

Agree - by my reckoning Sam Johnstone = 1/1 in signings for Bruce so far- young with ability, yes it would be great to get another 4 in (Three midfielders and one forward )

I thought we were after two midfielders and a right back

Hourihane now 1/4 odds to join us. Apparently ( according to the Meaning Evil) if he was'nt transferred now , for approx 1mil ,  he would join on a free in the summer.
So, a no -brainer for Barnsley, essentially, all or nothing.......Godzvilla!

Lansbury rumoured to be 40k per week, hasn't anyone realised we are in division 2!!!
That is ridiculous.

Lansbury rumoured to be 40k per week.

Absolute madness if true. Especially when the highest paid player at Leeds is on 17k.

We are much bigger and much wealthier than Leeds, and his contract expires this Summer. We were always going to pay over the odds.

If his contract expired in 2019, we might have paid him 20k a week but spent a £6 million transfer fee. So it's not like we are massively losing out.

Any article on this is a complete misrepresentation of the facts. The data relates to FY15. Since then, we have sold a number of our high profile players, who will have been on larger salaries and been relegated, which caused a lot of the squads' salaries to be dramatically reduced. Couple that with the fact that the new Premier League mega money will have pushed a few teams above us and we will be much further down the pecking order than the report suggests.

Having said all that, we probably still pay an unsustainable amount in wages and another £40k per week for Lansbury probably doesn't help

Imagine spending the last two weeks lamenting lack of signings and then when we are on the verge of buying one of the best midfield players in the championship, people lament the wages. Bizarre

Sometimes I think it would be better in terms of psychology (and keeping a manageable wage bill) to just pay the player a big signing on fee to reflect the reduced transfer fee and keep the wages sensible.  That way he wouldn't have the £40k per week millstone round his neck.

I've not really seen much of Lansbury so dont know if he is worth £40k a week, if indeed anyone can be. Thing is though, if it doesnt work out, and he does seem to be something of a 'maverick' then if he's been vastly overpaid then he'll be far harder to shift on.
