I think it wss mentioned in the Sky commentary that Bruce was at the Cardiff v Barnsley game yesterday.
Scouting them for our game in a couple of weeks?

Who to sell in January what do we need
« Reply #511 on: December 19, 2016, 07:11:28 AM »
Having watched Villa in recent weeks Bruce has definitely improved us but we have a massive squad imbalance and for me we have to many selfish greedy players. The below is the list of players who can go

Ayew - bad character, selfish and greedy
McCormack - we won't be able to get rid of him but he just doesn't fit what we're trying to do too slow
Gabby- again won't go but simply not good enough
Elphick- slow ponderous and not good enough baker makes him look so bad which is saying something.
Westwood- has had so many years to prove himself and never has
Cissokho - out of favour and not very good can go if we can get a decent replacement in

In

New striker - we need a striker who can hold the ball up not just bounce off him. We need a more mobile version of gestede.

New athletic midfielder - strong mobile midfield runner. Mo Diame type

New keeper - bunn deserves a run but neither him or gollini are good enough

Utility fullback on loan

Centre back on loan to cover baker and Chester

With Gabby and Richards still here there's plenty of shite still to shift.  Hopefully some prize plums out there such as Moyes will come in for Richards and Lambert for Gabby (wishful thinking I know).

I'd try and get one of Jack Cork/Henri Lansbury/Jake Livermore probably. We need something better in there.

Striker is a priority, Rhodes on loan would be ideal for me and have Kodj playing off him.

Talk of two loan signings 'verbally agreed' - assuming they're Johnstone and Jenkinson.

What's this Gestede to Boro or Palace rumour that's going around? If we could get our money back for him and put that towards the new midfielder fund, that plus Johnstone and Jenkinson I think would be a reasonably solid window. Would be nice to get another striker of course, but I'm skeptical anyone decent will really be available and won't have better options than us.

Our current team simply isn't good enough as it stands to make and stay in the top six. Happy to have McCormack and Ayew on the bench but they're too mercurial to be regular starters. At the very least we need two midfielders, a striker and a right back in the next month that can go straight in and improve our starting eleven.

Everyone seems to think that we need a new striker, but where is he going to play? We currently have last years player of the year plus 3 other strikers who have scored 20+ goals at this level, plus Adomah and Grealish as extra wide options. McCormack and Gestede may not have scored a hatful this season but they have been in and out of the team and had very little supply. And that's what we need, supply and energy from midfield to create and support the strikers. A goalkeeper and stand in centre back would be a big plus as well.

While I accept the fact that Gestede had one great goalscoring season at this level for Blackburn, I have seen absolutely nothing to suggest he will get close to doing it again for us. Furthermore I'm struggling to think of a worse centre forward to have led the line for Villa since 1970.

I agree. But I will raise you a John Fashanu.

Ayew - bad character, selfish and greedy

I'm getting increasingly fed up of reading this nonsense. Bad character? says who?. If he's selfish and greedy (rather than simply being guilty of making bad decisions from time to time) what is Kodjia ?

Shopping list must haves for me

Right back. Absolutely essential. I've never known a right back get some much of the ball as Hutton does and then do absolutely nothing useful with it. Shocking player

Left sided centre back as cover for Baker.

Two central midfielders, preferably of the athletic and forward thinking variety to play with Jedinak

A striker, because come January the though of us relying on Gabby, Rudy and McCormack to fire in enough golas petrifies me

That said, maybe Rudy and Ross will link better than Ross with any other striker we have. They didn't look to bad early season together from memory

Daniel Johnson
Tom cairney
Houlihane or whatever his name is from Barnsley

Plus definitely a centre back or someone who can play full back and centre  back

I bet that Daniel Johnson is good.

That Ryan Woods from Brentford was good and wiki tells me that he's from Cannock.

I think Dean Smith took him from Walsalls youth system.

Tony Cascarino, Gary Penrice, Carlton Cole, Bosco Balaban....?

To be fair, I understand Gestede is not everyone's cup of tea, technique and team play are certainly not his forte but at this level and with the right supply he is still a threat in the air. Even taking him out of it, we still don't need a striker, money should be spent elsewhere.

Get a decent left winger who can cross a ball and a decent right back who can cross a ball, play 442 and have wingers and fullbacks working together on both sides to get crosses in between the keeper and defence, get 7-8 decent crosses into that area per game and Gestede could get you 20-30 in a season at this level because he comes onto the ball with so much strength and power that he's almost unstoppable.  Teams would learn quickly that you have to shut down our wide players but that would also create space for Kodjia/Ayew/Ross to find pockets around the box where they can be dangerous as well.

I'm not a big fan of 442 I think it leaves you far too rigid against better sides but with our forward options it's probably the simplest way to get out of this league.
