I'm obviously not as depressed or angry as most of you. For the first time for many weeks I stayed on at the end - as did many others - and applauded the players, most of whom, including Lescott, came right over to the away stand. Yes, we lost a game we should have won and yes, it had to be Deeney who scored, but at least the players showed fight and commitment this time and it really did seem that the result mattered to them. The mood of our supporters was interesting: booing of the usual players in the early stages, mock euphoria when we managed a shot, but it changed to sincere and vociferous cheering when we seized control of the game, something we haven't done for ages.

I'm not pretending for one moment that today's improved  performance can in any way compensate for all the mistakes on and off the field in a truly awful season, but we've been giving the players lots of criticism for not trying and seeming not to care. Today they did and I for one want to recognise that.

Good to hear that Frank. But why put the effort in now? Why not earlier, before our fate was sealed? What's changed? The cynic in me says that it's perhaps because some of them know that they're on their way, and a few gutsy performances might get them a bigger club and bigger money.

Admire your support Frank but like Croatian I think it is so much easier now for the players to play the crowd.  We needed them to show their mettle against Watford at home not now when it counts for nothing.  Watford have got nothing to play for now.  At VP they had as much at stake as we did.  A good club man is the one who does it when it matters, not as an apology.

I obviously understand what you're both saying. I rarely miss a game and I've been as frustrated as anyone by the lack of effort for several months now. But I thought that several of our players were trying for the team today and not for their future - Westwood, for example, Clark, Ayew, Gana, Hutton and, yes really, Lescott. (I can't really include Gestede, poor lad. He does try but he just hasn't got it.)

Frank I really admire your loyalty and if I had been fit would have been in that rabbit hutch in Watford with you.  It is such a shame that the players did not get it when they needed to EG against Liverpool.

I agree with you there, Brian. For sheer awfulness the Liverpool capitulation surpasses anything I've seen in years

The expected kick in the balls.  How did Kevin Toner do?  Lots on twitter saying he looked ok.

There are no positives. Not one. We are shit and have no manager.

This. I don't buy the claims of "we played better" and "the players cared today" all I saw was the same players doing the same stupid things like usual. Stupid tackles in dangerous areas and none-stop giving the ball away. We conceded two late goals in both halves then threw away everything in injury time. (mainly due to the same morons 1; Hutton not closing his man down 2; Buffoona ball watching)

Hutton is prized pillock, I cannot stand him and any claims of 'at least he tries' the guy has no idea what the meaning of playing well for 90+ minutes means, none.

No need to comment on nocluna, we all know what he is.

Agree with all that Frank said from watching on my stream. The big difference for me was having the likes of Clark and Toner in the team. Both wanting to give their all, both still with something to play for (the Euros) as well as showing a bit of pride in the shirt. Hutton always gives it his best, Lescott tries with his dodgy legs, Gana and Westwood got busy and Ayew will run all day, he's enough self pride to want to succeed whatever the occasion. Add to that the more mobile Gestede and we actually had a team that were finally up to matching the opposition in effort.

It's just a shame we have no leaders on the pitch and a manager that can organise the team better. Still, it was finally comforting to see a Villa team that actually gave a shit. Better late than never. I'm glad to hear our fans showed them we aren't fickle, we have standards and will remind our players when they're not meeting them and applaud them when they do.

He's fond of the James Collins-esque hoof up field but there's nothing wrong with that at this stage of his career.

Could be back up to a Clark/Baker partnership next season

Sometimes anger can blind you. It's hard to cast a weather eye on matters when you've been turned over by another wanky no mark club who, like last week's opponents are little more than a genital wart on the history of English football for all they've contributed to it.
