Twelve off Proctor's over from Jeets secures a batting point.

Jeez I'm celebrating underachievement like a nose.

What makes you think Hampshire will get the win?  They scored nearly 600 last week and drew, they've scored over 400 7 times and haven't won a single one of those matches all season.  I agree they look in a better spot than us right now but batting hasn't been their problem and it has been ours so with us both batting today I'd have expected them to be in a bretter position than us by the end of the day.  What happens when they have the ball tomorrow and thursday is much more significant.

If they get maximum batting points and we get none, they could finish above us with a draw if we lose.

Only if they also get 3 bowling points and we get none.  Given we have 42 out of 45 for the season that seems overly pessimistic.  I agree that them getting 5 batting points and us getting none would be a shitty day but that alone won't decide our fate.  The simple fact is that we need 1 bonus point and then to match their result.  The latter is the bigger concern because I really can't see us not getting a bowling point and still somehow being able to get a draw (which i suspect Hampshire will get).  On that basis the key part of the Hampshire match is the Durham first innings.  If Hampshire suddenly work out how to take 20 wickets and get a win (against someone other than Notts) then we're in trouble.

In our game the biggest concern is whether we can post a big enough score to either give us a chance to bowl them out and go for the win or to at least make it difficult for them to fly past us and bowl for the match.

Given both games look like they might lose some time to rain tomorrow and with heavy clouds around might struggle for the light all 4 days I still think 2 draws is the most likely outcome because nothing has happened so far to contradict that.

I think Hampshire scoring quickly also enables them to lose some time for the weather. Another way to look at it is that they (so far) couldn't really have done anymore - we certainly could.

True but their batting is their strong side, their bowling is weak, we're the opposite so right now we're comparing apples and pears, that's my point.  If after 2 innings they have a massive lead and we don't then it's significant but right now they're playing to the strength and we're really not.

8th wicket down means we're not going to last much longer but broke 200 so the bonus point we needed to be able to just match the hampshire result is in the bag.

Incorrect, I think you failed to take into account the three points they get for drawing.

Anyway, we have a bonus point now. Assuming that they get maximum batting points we would only need to match their number of bowling points to guarantee that they would need to win (or tie) to finish above us, a draw wouldn't be enough, even if we lost.

That could be the most important point of the season.

No, I think we both missed things, as I said all along, matching their result is the most important thing, that was always the case, if they draw (or tie) we always looked likely to need a draw.  that's why getting a bonus point was important because it means they now have to get a better result than us and as you say if we match them on the bowling points (as you'd hope, we can even lose this and still stay up if they can only make a draw.  As bleak as it looks at 208/8 we're in the driving seat still, unless our bowling fails us completely and Barker and Patel in particular haven't done that for a while.

As ever, it's difficult to gauge how good these scores are until both teams have batted.

If ever we could get Lancashire all out for 100 I'd fancy us... to still fuck it up and lose by six wickets! 😉

Exactly, the only thing you can go on is that Southampton has seen a lot of high scoring draws this summer and Edgbaston has seen much lower scoring games in general.

That hopefully bodes well for us getting maximum bowling points.

That hopefully bodes well for us getting maximum bowling points.

We generally do, only dropped 3 bowling points all summer.

I think the best thing to say today is that getting a bonus point from 105/5 is a good recovery, not where we want to be but when Ambrose went it looked like we might be in much more trouble than this.  Wright gone so not much longer to go but it's better than we feared earlier when the bonus point looked far from safe.

Agreed. And Cricinfo seems to have died. Got the BBC wicket update ages ago.

They've gone off for bad light at Lord's where they have floodlights but naturally this being cricket, aren't allowed to use them.
