Durham are... whatever the cricketing version of "on the beach" is.

I feared they might be, although Stokes playing is a positive, the fact that their main two bowlers Rushworth and Onions have only bowled 11 of the 47 overs so far says a lot.

Anyone know why Stokes has been allowed to play in that one but Woakes can't play for us and Bairstow can't play for Yorks (to name 2 that have been mentioned on here)?

Only Mr Strauss could explain that one. There appears to be no consistency. Here's the list of centrally contracted players:

Moeen Ali (Worcestershire) RESTED
James Anderson (Lancashire) RESTED
Ian Bell (Warwickshire) PLAYING
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire) RESTED
Jos Buttler (Lancashire) RESTED
Alastair Cook (Essex) RESTED
Steven Finn (Middlesex) PLAYING
Eoin Morgan (Middlesex) RESTED
Joe Root (Yorkshire) RESTED
Ben Stokes (Durham) PLAYING
Mark Wood (Durham) RESTED

Then the likes of Bairstow and Woakes who have incremental contracts are not allowed to play.

It's all very strange, if you're going to protect one of your all rounders surely the one who's had 2-3 injuries over the summer would be better to rest than the one who's had the summer of his life and has seens a huge drop in his workload for the last month.  6 1-dayers in 5 weeks really shouldn't leave him needing to be rested ahead o the tour to Bangladesh.

back on topic, 3 maidens in a row, we just don't seem able (or is it willing) to score from Kerrigan, makes it pretty easy for Lancs to lock us down.  Someone needs to go after him but it's a big risk.

It's not just the fact we lose wickets that has fucked us, it's our negative slow batting.

Not only does it mean that, when the collapse arrives, we have a smaller number of runs and are in even more shit, but on the rare occasions that we aren't pissing wickets, we fail to take advantage, either in terms of bonus points or putting ourselves in winning positions.

Point of example: we've made ten runs from our last ten overs.

Considering that many of the same players are perfectly attacking in shorter-form cricket, that must be down to coaching/confidence.

The way our batting has become so brittle is pretty concerning.

It has been like it for a a good while - in the past our lower order would dig us out of a mess, this year they haven't been able to.

I think Hampshire will get the win, and looking at our match, it is tough to see us winning from here.

What makes you think Hampshire will get the win?  They scored nearly 600 last week and drew, they've scored over 400 7 times and haven't won a single one of those matches all season.  I agree they look in a better spot than us right now but batting hasn't been their problem and it has been ours so with us both batting today I'd have expected them to be in a bretter position than us by the end of the day.  What happens when they have the ball tomorrow and thursday is much more significant.

I've been kind of resigned to relegation for a few weeks, that's why I was determined to enjoy Lords at the weekend as it's still been a good season now whatever happens.

I think they will win as they have everything to play for and Durham don't. The pitch is already turning.

Colville just asked the question "mind you if Bairstow were available who would you drop from this team?" Robert Key sounded incredulous.

I've never agreed with that analogy, sometimes you see teams perform better when they're safely midtable with nothing to play for because players express themselves without any fear, there's certainly very little evidence of a drop in performance in most sports.  People think there is because every time a team like that loses it's claimed that they're 'already on the beach' but the stats just don't back it up.

On the pitch turning that may be true but it's not helping Durham take wickets and they have a better bowling attack than Hampshire so that doesn't really mean anything.

I'm not trying to cause an argument here but I just find it funny at times like this that teams who've been shit all season are suddenly going to turn into world beaters and we're fucked if we don't do the same.  You see it on the main forum all the time.

If they get maximum batting points and we get none, they could finish above us with a draw if we lose.

It would hardly be them turning into a team of world beaters - we are talking about them winning their third game of the season in their last match. It is perfectly possible.

The thing that is greater concern to me isn't really what Hampshire are doing, it is our pretty woeful 4 day form over the second part of the season, and in particular our poor start to this game.

Also, they have won a CC game at the Rose Bowl and we have not here at Edgbaston.
