Is the text at the bottom of the Championship table correct? Why are two sides going down and only one coming up? That would leave one division with 8 teams and the other with 11

It's correct, 8 in Div 1 from next season, 10 in Div 2.
Do you know the reasoning behind this?

In theory its around the England cricketers getting more rest by playing less 4 day cricket on the premise that the majority of England players
play in the top division...notts blew that out the water earlier today. There are mitigating circumstances as well. Trying to find an article i read which i will post if i find.

How does that work when the England contracted players play bugger-all County cricket of any description?

Think we've been quite lucky with the scores today thankfully.

I disagree, there's nothing lucky about teams that aren't as good as us (according to the current table) getting results as bad as ours in the main.  I started to type something about this yesterday but wimped out in case it was tempting fate.  The reality is that Hampshire have the worst bowling attack in the league.  Them failing to bowl a team out isn't luck it's an explanation for why they're 8th in the table.  Notts are bottom for a reason and middlesex are top for a reason that result going as it did is no great shock.

We're not in a great spot, that's fairly clear, but neither are Hampshire and that 8 point cushion is significant.

To reduce the number of games from sixteen to fourteen. This will affect both divisions  (Division Two teams won't play every other side in the league twice).

Well yeah I guessed it would reduce the number if games but I didn't at all believe the reasoning could be england players because as mentioned above they play close to naff all anyway. They mainly play at the start of the season and that's it. I can't possibly see how this will reduce that. Not that it needs to anyway.

If it means the season starts a couple of weeks later than I'm in favour, as I said early in this thread the early games are a complete waste of time in my opinion because the weather controls the result more than the performances. If this sees a reduction in the number of games played in those conditions then it can only be seen as a benefit for me.

The 8 team top division is so that if they ever get to the point that the 8 teams are the test ground counties they'll abolish promotion / relegation in an instant....I might be cynical :-)

In this important round of matches lunch time scores:
Durham 110/2 31 V Surrey
Middx 93/0 31 overs v Lancs
Yorks 90/4 32.1 v Somerset

A very good morning for Somerset in the title race.

Even better for Middlesex though.

I offer no apology here Chris but i don't want Yorks to win title, i know chances are really slim but would love it if Somerset could come
through the pack. Highly unlikely and they would have to give Yorks a right good hiding.
The game between the top 2 next week obviously the crucial game.

Yorks have had enough championship success over last couple of years....and the crowing about how done it without a few regulars to
England!!!! Sorry Chris...i daresay i'm not alone. Does show what a great job Gillespie has done up there. A hard act to follow!!!

I'd rather Yorkshire didn't win it either. My Dad's a Yorkshire fan and whenever Warwickshire beat them in other formats (e.g hammered them when we went to Headingley in the 50-over cup this season), he always refers back to the Championship and how other formats 'aren't proper cricket'. At least if they weren't winning the Championship they wouldn't have a fallback when they more often than not do badly in the other 2 formats.

It's not proper cricket!

I like the 50 over format but have no interest whatsoever in the 20 over stuff.
