And that's the point. Two banners and a chorus of Going Down has been exaggerated out of all proportion. Their supporters I spoke to after the match were angry at the players, not us. As ever, we let the other side control the story.

A couple of mates who were at the game said they were a bit taken aback by some of the hostility they experienced before and after the match and were a bit baffled as to where it all came from as well as the gleeful celebration of their relegation. Don't know which pubs they were in but there was some trouble caused by Villa fans spoiling for a fight. Consequently they are now looking forward to the last game of the season.

Anyway, one of them told me he reckons they won't win today as they never win three in a row, whereas I pointed out we never seem to win one in a row.

They believed their own hype for so long they never realised that every club would have done the same as we did.

At least they won't be the ones to send us down, we'll be down long before that game.

I do remember that it was a very hot day, on the Sunday of a bank holiday weekend, and a 4pm kickoff. No work next day for many and the first excuse of the year to get trollied in the sun.

I can only speak for the ones I know who pretty much have a gallows humour where they are concerned but they both said there was a nasty atmosphere in the pubs and after the game which they found baffling.

Whoever was going to be relegated was going to be mocked and have the piss taken out of them so I don't understand why they get so upset, it will happen to us this season at some stage and I'm sure whoever it is will enjoy their day but if there are hundreds of Geordies with home made banners at Villa Park on the last day we'll just have to suck it up!

They could probably send us down today.

I think Shearer being in charge when they went down played a part in why they were so bitter.

Busy afternoon today. Off to the cinema to see Star Wars The Force Awakens, followed by watching the Villa game on Sky tonight.

So, a tale of desperation and misery, as a desperate, down trodden group of individuals battle in the face of adversity and fear despite the actions of an elusive dark overlord.

And also Star Wars The Force Awakens.

I think much of Newcastle's ire is based on the idea that such an insignificant club as Villa could take such delight in their downfall. A kind of who-the-fuck-are-you-to-give-us-grief mentality. Whereas, anybody else would have done the same because of Newcastle's inflated sense of self-importance. Man Utd, Liverpool, Chelsea would have been just as bad if not worse. The whole country wanted them relegated. We dispatched them with a bit of wit.

Now it's our turn, and we'll have to take our medicine. Except we won't be getting all precious over it.

It's only November what can they take the piss about?
You might have less time for your Christmas shopping than you think...

Good one.

I am sure the house purchasing committee have matters all in hand.

Fortunately, unlike the Villa, we are entertaining guests throughout the day today, so will not be able to watch.

I used to be annoyed if the other half planned something like this when we're playing. Now I don't seem to care.

This thread title should be re-named Newcastle United v Rock Bottom Aston Villa, I've heard it that many times today on Sky.

In attempt to remember that football can just be entertainment, I'm across the river at the Gateshead v Woking game
