In December 1956 a new sky blue shirt was introduced. This was the first season that the club badge was worn on the shirts and culminated in an FA Cup win in 1957 when the team wore a dramatic pin striped shirt - apparently to provide sufficient contrast for TV coverage.

A one-off away kit, if there's such a thing. in 56, Blues and Man City both wore away kits in the final. As did Everton and Albion in 68

FA rules stated that, if there was a colour clash, both sides would have to wear away kits

Trouble is, I would want to be sure that the team were going to worthy of the honour of wearing such an iconic shirt from our history and were capable of storming up & out of the second division.
The thought of some of last season's wasters tainting it would make me very sad indeed.

Kits are so spoilt with the sponsors name. That 57 kit would be butchered if we had to put our current sponsor all over it.

It was probably due to the TV coverage of the time. Both having light coloured shirts could have been problem to see on 1950s black and white TVs, so stripes were added to ours to make them look different.
