Amavi looks like he can't defend. Ayew has scored a handful of goals and just about stands out in comfortably the worst side in the division.
There's a reason why certain teams finish high and others low and it's normally they've got a better standard of players.

West Ham raid Marseille and sign Payet. He turns out to be a cracking player.
We raid the middle reaches of the division and they turn out to be very average indeed.

It would have taken a minor miracle for all of them to make the big step up from mid table in a slow French division and do well here.

We've signed 3 players from other Premier league clubs the last 4 years. One is 33 and his legs have gone and cost nothing. One hasn't played consistently for nearly 5 years and cost nothing and the other hasn't played consistently for nearly 5 years too and cost a couple of million. Tells a damning story.

We just don't buy Premier League standard players anymore and that's the cause of our decline in a nutshell.

Couple in we signed Veretout from a team that finished 14th in the French league and only scored 29 goals.
Ayew from a team that finished 16th in the French league.
Amavi from a team that finished 11th in the French league .
Gueye from a team that finished 8th in the French league.
Crespo from a team that finished rock bottom and conceded 68 goals.
Gestede from a mid table Championship side.

We we're not even raiding the better sides from the French league, we picked from the mid to lower half sides. Stupidity and more money spunked all over the place.

Benteke - striker from a team which finished 17th.

Is Benteke going to be dragged up to counter everything like he was in the Lambert days? Way more often then not if you buy players from the poorer sides and ask them to step up they can't.

No, it's just to point out that coming from a shit side doesn't mean the player is shit.

Amavi didn't look shit. Ayew (mentioned by the poster) is one of our best players this season (if not the best). Veretout doesn't look shit either.

It's an argument that doesn't make sense.

Also, taking the argument to mean buying players from big clubs is the way forward, we bought Richards and Sinclair from one of the 'big four' Man City. They've hardly been a roaring success.

We bought two players from Man City who have barely played for 5 years.

That's the type we're going to sign from the top teams though, isn't it? Because if they were the top players, the top teams wouldn't sell them to us and they wouldn't join us. So we're back to signing bit-part players from the top sides, or the better players from the lower sides like Amavi, Ayew and Veretout, none of whom are 'shit'.

All the players we have aquired recently from man city have been rubbish. Dunne, Ireland, richards sinclair... They have all made their millions and have no motivation.

Dunne certainly was not rubbish in his first season.

He was better than we have now, but at lot worse than who he replaced. Guaranteed a mistake in a big game too.

Doumbia going to Newcastle by the looks of it.

Another one down. Good God it's depressing being a Villa fan this season.

Just saw on SKY that Sunderland are signing the wide player (Kharzi?) that we were linked with for £9m.

It's a bit crap but we'll just have to move on to (target) number two.

But we don't have to sign bit part players either do we, we've picked up way too many of those the last 3 years. There's something in between and we've gotten nowhere close to hitting the mark.

Remi is hopeful of one in, pretty sure that's Debuchy isn't it? If so we've managed to conjure up a right back who's had a season and a half off pretty much. Terrible business. We might as well save whatever we have because a right back that's going back after 15 games is a waste of bloody time and will have no effect on this season.

If we're only signing them from the top clubs - and you've said that we shouldn't sign players from teams in mid/lower half positions, then probably yes we do.

I completely agree that there's something in between - and that is the type of player we signed this summer - Ayew, Amavi and Veretout who you've written off as not good enough. Okore - another one - signed from a league which wouldn't be considered a top league, but actually one of our better players.

The problem isn't with them - it's with the lower league players we've signed such as Gestede, Westwood et al who shouldn't be first teamers and the so-called established Premier League players Richards, Agbonlahor, Hutton, N'Zogbia who have repeatedly been crap for us.
