Whether we are rock bottom or not, we still need to strengthen for next season regardless of the division we are in.

Yes thats right but that might be best done in the Summer. If it is then we should wait as our fate for this season is already been decided.

The time to strengthen for next season is in the summer.  The only exception to this would be if a player is available and his contract runs out in the summer.

The summer is the only time that even good championship players will want to move. They won't want to swap getting promoted with a decent championship side to get relegated with us to play in the championship again next year. It's common sense.

I thought there may be some exciting news when I saw that this thread had suddenly jumped several pages. Someone mentioned O'Neill, I should have known  ;D

The point was valid enough, Naismith for 8.5 mill is exactly the kind of deal O'Neill would have tipped his hat to. Fkin nuts. How that shows the current club management in a bad light is beyond me.

It's fair to say that things can seem pretty bad when your transfer target prefers to move to a less illustrious club and you are left watching a collection of free transfers, lower league cheapos, unkowns from the continent and ex youthers supplemented by the odd big buy. But who cares about Everton's problems.

Everyone has a different take on the cause of our demise, the truth is there is no single event it is a culmination of many things. O'Neil left us in the shit no doubt, the timing of his departure couldn't have been worse for the club. He left us with many journeymen players on huge salaries that we couldn't sell also true, but when you look at the squad back then it was still competitive, not for challenging the top teams but certainly against the middle order. Whatever occurred after O'Neil was sheer breathtaking incompetence, I don't think apart from buying Darren Bent that the powers that be got any decision right, it has been a litany of failures. For me it comes down to a conclusion that from the day that O'Neil walked out all thought of competing at the top vanished taking with it any ambition Lerner had for the club. Lerner was in it for the glory not to be an also ran, the dream died and he left others to make one terrible appointment after another.

There's lots of culprits who have played various roles in our demies but the one constant is Randy Lerner, the chief bungler.

So to sum up.

Some people think we're f##ked and there's no point getting anyone in.
Some people think we're f##ked, but think we should be getting players in to improve the back end of the season and prepare for next season if the right players are available AND willing to come.
Some people think we're f##ked but think that signing the likes of Steven Naismith on that sort of contract is a good idea as it would at least show we're doing something.

*EDIT* Forgot to add that some people still believe we can crawl our way out of it with.

My own gut feeling is that it's the "AND willing to come" bit that we're struggling with with regards to getting anyone in and as others have said, will be looking at us as pretty much the the option of last resort.

With regards Naismith. For a couple of million towards the end of his contract, fair enough. For £8M plus, you're having a laugh. A slightly better Andreas Weimann with a Scottish accent.
Spending £8M on someone of comparable ability to Amavi or Ayew, fair enough.

Naismith for £3m would have been a good signing. Not for £8m + survival add ons.

That's a lot of money for a couple of months.

I'd like Debuchy to join, but if we're bothering with that we really need a goalkeeper and a striker.

It does suggest that money is not the problem, its getting players to agree to come that Villa are struggling with
