Because if you are getting a lot of money in, you are obviously selling your better players, if you are starting from a weak base, which we were then I'd say its pretty certain that if you aren't investing heavily on improving the team, not just spending what you made, you are going to struggle very badly to move on up. Unless every one you buy hits the ground running and are great purchases.

Has anyone in the last 10 or 20 years made improvements from years of struggle without spending any money? I can't remember any off the top of my head.

has anyone, from years of struggle, sold a player for £32m?  In context that's almost the entirety of what Leicester have spent in the 2 seasons since they came up, add on the Delph money and we're there.  Spending loads more money and running up debts wouldn't have helped all that much.In my opinion the big mistake was Gestede who just can't do the role he was bought for, better scouting and a couple of million extra may have been all the difference but it would still have been a tiny net spend.

Why would we have run up debts this season if we had spent a bit more on fleshing out what was the worst squad still in the premier league last season? Would it have cost that much to make improvements on Richardson? Bacuna? Westwood? Guzan? We were on the eve on the biggest contract in football history, absolute mega riches and you are worrying about spending a little extra on improving the worst squad in the division who have just sold their best players. How would we have gotten in to massive debt seeing as 2 seasons ago we had almost broken even and since then we have lowered the wage bill even more?

My honest opinion is that Gestede is a better player than we have seen in a Villa shirt.  Not brilliant by any stretch of the imagination but better than he has been for us.  He is one of the many we have brought in in recent years who, in my opinion, unable to make himself deliver.  The big unmeasured factor in assessing incoming players is their mental strength.

To put the boot on the other foot suppose we decided to sell Jack Grealish.  Any competent watcher of him would have to make an assessment of what was going on in his head.

A constantly recurring theme in our endless strings of defeats is the way the team crumbles.  Any new player coming to us has to have the character as well as the technical ability

It would be hard to say that they were struggling, but Spurs probably look to be in their healthiest position in a long time and over the last five years are £8m in profit on their transfer dealings.

Their chairman is pretty switched on and drives a hard bargain

No. Our squad at the start of the season included Cole and Steer. Cole has been sold and Steer is still out on loan

As much as he played well tuesday I'd still let him go for that. He's going to struggle at this level to play every week. He's at MLS age now. But this would be on the proviso we get the bordeaux lad in (or another CH).

We resubmit in Feb too don't we? We can make space for new signings.

He's been a good servant to the club, let him have his last pay day

I'd let him go if we could get someone better in.

Presumably this can't happen until the summer anyway because he has already played for two clubs this season and can't play for a third. The only way it could is if MLS 2016 falls into a different season in the football calendar

The MLS season has just finished I think. Ridgewell's team Portland Timbers just won the title.
