Cole’s wages, which are likely to be around the £20,000 a week mark, would have been a stumbling block but it seems where there’s a will there’s a way, the likelihood being that the player has agreed to forego some of his pay packet.

Where's the quote about him being on £20k a week from? Surely it's not that low. And I can't imagine Cov being able to afford to pay for his eels and mash to be taxi'd-up from Canning Town never mind anything else.

It was said at the time we signed him he was taking a big drop in wages.

We needed a player so signed what was probably the best available. Ultimately he wasn't good enough but it was hardly a bizarre signing.
