I was encouraged by our performance against Sunderland for long spells and against Leicester for 45 minutes, but we didn't win those games and now it's looking like familiar problems are resurfacing.

We have to improve and start winning some of the seemingly less winnable games or we'll go down. That's it. The lack of points from our relatively easy start means we have to find a way of collecting points from our games against the West Ham, Southampton, Spurs, Swansea tier of teams.

The next seven games suddenly look very tough. Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City interspersed with Stoke, Spurs, Swansea and Everton. Can't see us getting much from those.

Looking at our best 11, is it really much better than last season?
Guzan- looks worse than last season with no Given back up.
Amavi- looks a real prospect but poor yesterday and making errors- so jury still out
Lescott- nothing to suggest better than Clark or Okore.
Richards- good relacement for Vlaar- but better? just hopefully less injured.
Bacuna and Hutton the same.
Gana is a replacement for Delph but not an upgrade - yet.
Gill was here.
Sinclair was here but better than Weiman.
Westwood still here still playing as is was Sanchez.
Vertout better than NZog? not difficult
Traore a decent prospect and hopefully better than Gabby
Ayew,or Gested better than Benteke? you are having a laugh!!!
My conclusion is that we are in worse shape than last year.

Doesn't take a rocket scientist , Benteke has kept us up for 3 seasons more or less single handedly and we've replaced him with Ayew & Gestede.
We are in a whole ocean of trouble. Needed to sign Charlie Austin.

You cannot look or plan too far ahead in football. Confidence is such a fragile and brittle thing, with momentum pushing sides either way a significant factor.

Tomorrow's game is massive and the ideal game to bounce back with as winning it will be extra special, the same as it would be in the league; its more than getting through to the next round, its more than three points and so on.

Take some confidence back and go to Anfield, where we've lost only once in six trips, winning half of them, against a side whose manager is on the brink and you have a chance.

Bring Gana and Veretout into the midfield with a three alongside Sanchez and you've got a platform to go with that confidence and an opportunity to stop the rot in the league. This is a massive week for us. The season is currently only going one way, but as I type on the 21st September, it is far from over.
