Both Tottenham and Adebayor have done pretty badly here. They've probably had to pay his full wages, he's stuck without a club. Shame.

But he wasn't a free agent when the window closed, I thought that was the important bit?

Apparently yes. He can't sign for anyone till January now.

Wouldn't that be a restriction of trade? How was he to know he'd have his contract paid up when it was and so now has effectively lost the opportunity to earn 3 months income.

But the alternative is that any club/player could agree to cancel a contract at any time, which would effectively make the transfer window redundant.

The only players released though would be ones not wanted by the clubs and deemed as not worth anything to them. Plus the player needs to be happy to leave as well. So you're not going to see us releasing Benteke as an example, you still need a transfer window to sell him. That's how I see it anyway, admittedly i'm still half asleep!

We already have.

1] Brad Guzan
2] Tiago Ilori
4] Micah Richards
5] Jores Okore
6] Ciaran Clark
7] Leandro Bacuna
8] Idrissa Gueye
9] Scott Sinclair
11] Gabby Agbonlahor
12] Joe Cole
13] Jed Steer
15] Ashley Westwood
16] Joleon Lescott
17] Jordan Veretout
18] Kieran Richardson
19] Jordan Ayew
21] Alan Hutton
22] Gary Gardner
24] Carlos Sanchez
25] Carles Gil
27] Libor Kozak
28] Charles N'Zogbia
31] Mark Bunn
33] Jose Angel Crespo
39] Rudy Gestede

Three other players are registered as U21s.

20] Adama Traore
23] Jordan Amavi
40] Jack Grealish

If there is a special dispensation that allows you to de-list a player, N'Zogbia would be the obvious one then.

Is there anything stopping Villa offering him a deal to start in January, with him joining the squad in training, until then.

Common sense.

I think (hope) he'll end up at West Ham rather than Villa.

Hopefully either Gestede or Ayew or Kozac will find goalscoring form soon then the thought of giving the money obsessed Adebayor any kind of contract will fade from Tim Sherwood's mind with the speed of light.

Now he's been released from his contract by Spuds can we take him as a free agent? Certainly a better option for goals than Ayew or Gestede at the minute

No because he was still registered with Spuds after deadline day. We could have him in January though. Hopefully we won't need to.

Suddenly I am starting to wonder if we shouldn't take a gamble on him.  If things don't look better up front then it might be worth thinking about in January not right now.

I've changed my mind on him. I didn't want him but I think he would be a much better option than Ayew or Gestede who look Championship standard thus far. He's obviously a crank but I think him as a focal point with Traore, Grealish, Gil/Sinclair behind him would make us an impressive attacking force, it would just be the shambles at the other end.

I think if we could have him now it would be an easy matter. If we can't get him until January, we might as well scout a long-term alternative and make a proper signing in January.

If we got him in January it would be March before he was physically and mentally March fit. By then our goose could be cooked.
