So whispers on twitter was spot on that he had done the shirt stretching bit.

I heard that earlier in the summer from a mate with a contact at BH that it was all done and dusted, then all went quiet.

I heard too from someone high up at the club.

No, I think he wanted his contract paying up for him to be released by Spurs.  Spurs initially just wanted to release him but then eventually agreed to pay the shortfall on his wages.  Same money but upfront compared with over the season and, potentially, could have just packed up the game.
