If all this is true then why the fuck are we giving him a game?

Richards spent the last ten minutes on Saturday going on his mad dashes up front with little effort to get back. By the time of the goal, I think he was playing up front

Richards being constantly out of position is bad enough but when Hutton does the same you can see as clear as day how we concede so many soft goals.

I think Newcastle and West Ham showed that we are better at the back without him. West Ham the goal only came from the defensive re-organisation post Sanchez going off injured. Hutton was his usual liability but we at least held a back 4 for much of the game.

Richards is back and we concede comedy goal after comedy goal. I have never gone off a player so fast watching Villa.

Agree I'd punt him at right back for a couple of games though to see if he is any better than Hutton.

Even when he played at right back his positioning and concentration were his weakest points. Only a total idiot of Sherwoodesque proportions would think anyone with these specific deficiencies should play in the centre of defence.

Because nobody as far as I can tell knows if it is true or not

When he first made it into the Man City first team, I thought he looked a decent right-back, as he liked to go on rampaging runs forward and frequently caused havoc.

Then he played at CB and looked total rubbish, with no positional sense.

Plus ça change...

I have just asked him (on Twitter) if he fancies playing left LB a bit. But I asked him in French.

Seeing as we're all sticking the boot in for him being a tool - at City he used to impress the youth players (an old neighbour of mine being one of them) by doing handbrake turns in the car park at Citeh's old(?) training ground. At least he didn't stub Jamie Tandy's eye with a cigar, I guess. (Here's Joey's take on the latter incident if you're inclined to read it http://www.joeybarton.com/jamie-tandy-and-the-cigar/

Ian Taylor was really scathing about Richards on the radio last night.  Basically told him to shut up.

I believe Alan Hutton is contributing to the poor form of Richards.

Take a look at the average position of Hutton v Sunderland.

Look at the space Richards has to cover.

Maybe, but Sunderland's second made me think it was the other way round.  The left side of defence drops back but Richards moves forward.  Hutton takes his lead from his captain and defensive "organiser" and also stays forward.  Meaning Lescott, who did the correct thing, was left all on his lonesome.

Hutton is supposed to get forward and play slightly in front of the centre halves, Richards just does his own thing (i.e. awol for the 3rd goal)!

Whilst still not good enough, the defensive was noticeably less Keystone Cops like when Richards was out, with Hutton still playing at right back.

Neither of them are good enough as individuals where they're currently playing, but together they're the antithesis of being greater than the sum of your parts, they actually amplify each other's deficiencies.
