He is out of contract and contracts (IIRC) run from July 1st to July 1st. Out of contract players can agree a deal with new club up to 6 months prior to current contract ending so I assume officially he will sign on July 1st

Sunderland had also spoken to him at length about joining them as a centre-back and there was interest from Everton and West Ham in the player
